    Job Description

    We’re looking for a Geotechnical Laboratory Manager!

    Our 60-person engineering firm is seeking to hire a Geotechnical Laboratory Manger who is looking for an exciting new opportunity.

    Our Geotechnical Laboratory includes a full-time staff of 4 personnel who conduct geotechnical tests in support of our engineering services. The primary expertise of our consultancy is in rock mechanics and as such, our testing is primarily focused in geotechnical rock testing. However, our laboratory also provides soils geotechnical testing and hydrogeology laboratory testing services.

    Here’s the type of Person we are looking for:

    The Laboratory Manager is an exempt, hourly, full-time position that is responsible for the supervision, organization and execution of laboratory testing, analysis of testing data, ensuring the quality and accuracy of testing results. The Laboratory Manager ensures testing is performed per standards and interacts with the lab team, clients, and engineers on all aspects of testing programs.

    We are looking for someone who sees people first. The right candidate will not only possess the required technical skills, but also exceptional people skills. This role will not be heavily micro-managed and requires someone who is proactive and can manage their own work.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Supervises and ensures accurate and prompt completion of geotechnical laboratory tests.
    • Assigns and monitors the tasks of laboratory technicians.
    • Reports on testing progress and results to engineers and clients.
    • Ensures equipment calibration and maintenance are in compliance.
    • Ensures the safe operation of the laboratory and the safety of the laboratory employees and visitors to the laboratory.
    • Ensures lab is kept clean and in good repair.
    • Work to develop innovative solutions to continually improve the laboratory technology and equipment.
    • Perform administrative tasks including, scheduling for laboratory technicians, invoicing and budgeting.
    • Performs all other tasks as assigned by management.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Geosciences
    • 5+ years of laboratory work experience or a closely related field
    • Two years of employee supervisory experience
    • Located in Tucson, AZ.
    • US resident, eligible for employment

    Technical skills:

    • General knowledge and experience with geotechnical laboratory testing including ASTM and AASHTO standards.
    • Knowledge of physical concepts of force, stress, and strain.
    • Proficient with MS Office, especially Excel. Experience with VBA for Excel a plus.
    • General mechanical aptitude and ability to maintain testing equipment.
    • Ability to use powered hand tools such as soldering irons and saws.
    • Possesses experience with coding and programming, enhancing technical proficiency and enabling efficient problem-solving and automation within geotechnical and engineering applications—a valuable asset in adapting and optimizing processes in a technical consulting environment

    Physical Requirements:

    • Moderate physical activity required by lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently.
    • The ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb.
    • Fine motor skills, visual acuity including ability to see color.
    • Standing 30% of the time.
    • Walking 10% of the time, including walking outdoors on uneven surfaces.
    • Sitting 60% is required.

    Pay: $35.00 - $42.00 per hour
