Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as an NCDOT CEI Transportation Technician I Trainee. This is an entry-level position that offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in the field of Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) while working closely with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
As an NCDOT CEI Technician, you will be assigned to one or more active construction sites and be responsible for verifying the quality and compliance of project activities in accordance with North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) standards and specifications. You will learn how to inspect active construction operations and prepare daily written reports to document details of the work performed. You will also learn to measure quantities of construction materials and perform onsite materials testing of soil, concrete, and asphalt.
Over the course of two years, you will have the opportunity to advance your skillset through on-the-job training, attendance at certification classes, and completion of self-study courses online. Upon completion of the program, you will graduate to the position of Transportation Technician I.

Key Responsibilities
Duties will include but may not be limited to:
- Training and Development:
1. Participate in a comprehensive training program to develop skills in construction inspection, materials testing, and NCDOT standards, specifications, and procedures.
2. Learn to use testing equipment and software for accurate data collection and reporting.
3. Work under the guidance and mentorship of experienced construction professionals.
- Construction Inspection:
1. Assist in conducting inspections of construction activities to verify compliance with NCDOT standards, specifications, and contract documents.
2. Learn to document and report any deviations, deficiencies, or safety concerns.
3. Gain experience in monitoring progress and quality of work performed by contractors.
- Materials Testing:
1. Learn to perform various materials tests (e.g., concrete, asphalt, soil) under the supervision of experienced technicians.
2. Assist in recording and reporting test results accurately and promptly.
- Compliance and Documentation:
1. Assist in ensuring that all construction activities adhere to NCDOT regulations, guidelines, and contractual obligations.
2. Gain experience in maintaining detailed daily records of inspections, tests, and compliance documentation.
3. Support the preparation of project reports and documentation.
- Safety and Quality Assurance:
1. Work closely with the team to promote and enforce safety protocols and best practices on the construction site.
2. Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and contractors to address issues and ensure quality.
- Communication:
1. Communicate clearly and effectively with project stakeholders, including NCDOT representatives, contractors, and project team members.
2. Provide regular updates on project progress and address any concerns promptly.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong desire to learn and develop a career in CEI and transportation construction
- A strong sense of responsibility, a positive attitude, and the ability to work well independently and as part of a team
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Confidence performing mathematical operations, including ability to calculate area and volume of various shapes and convert between units of measurement (for example, from cubic feet to cubic yards)
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced construction environment
- Willingness and ability to complete training program and obtain necessary certifications, including Concrete, Asphalt, and Soils Certifications
- Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions
- Willingness to work weekends and nights if required
- Valid driver's license and favorable driving record
- Ability to pass a background check
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
