    • Status: Full Time, Nonexempt

    • Hours: Sundays 6:00am-2:30pm, Monday-Thursday 12:00pm-8:30pm. Flexibility for events and coverage as needed

    THE PLACE

    The Burnside Shelter of Portland Rescue Mission hosts our 24-hour ministry 365 days of the year to individuals experiencing homelessness in downtown Portland. Our Burnside Shelter is home to a broad spectrum of comprehensive emergency services, from immediate care (meals, restrooms, mail service, showers, clothing, etc.) to transitional shelter programming, all provided by a highly relational, skilled team focused on providing compassionate care and building relationships that serve to support growth away from the street environment.

    THE POSITION

    The Guest Relations Coordinator enthusiastically and professionally interacts with individuals impacted by homelessness (Guests) and facilitates ministry opportunities as a first touchpoint through our front desk (Guest Relations Office) and Guest Care Center, as well as all other services at the Burnside Shelter. This position is directly responsible supporting the volunteer ministry as they train, coach, and manage a team of volunteers. This role will continue the safe operation of the Burnside Shelter during their shift including de-escalation, conflict management, and accountability of individuals seeking services.

    THE ESSENTIALS

    • Ensure that individuals experiencing homelessness (Guests) who enter the Burnside Shelter will be welcomed into a dynamic environment of Christian hospitality rich with compassionate, highly relational and professional care, by modeling and leading competent volunteers to provide operational excellence, following all Portland Rescue Mission best practices and policies
    • Maintain best practices in administration, accountability, and structure of Burnside operations, documenting significant interactions with guests in a database and proactively communicating with the team via email
    • Supervise Volunteers and Volunteer Groups and ensure that all are welcomed, equipped, and encouraged in their service to Guests and Program Participants through relational care and training in partnership with the Volunteer Coordinator.
    • Advocates for continued volunteer involvement and support, including applicable communications to the volunteer team and recognition that leads to volunteer retention.
    • Serve as part of the Guest Services Team in providing coverage of the daily operations of the Burnside facility and the Guest Relations Office. Be available to intervene in difficult interactions when necessary to maintain the safety, health, and wellbeing of Guests, including providing basic first aid and administering Narcan nasal spray for overdoses when needed
    • Share the Gospel in ministry opportunities to Guests and Program participants, including one on one and occasional small group sharing

    BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS

    • Knowledge of and experience working with individuals in and around the homeless community, with challenges like those around addiction, mental health, and housing needs
    • Ability to navigate situations that often include escalated individuals, conflict, and the presence of violence
    • A passionate relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior and a testimony of continued growth in faith
    • A calling to serve God in the ministry to men and women experiencing homelessness and addiction
    • Actively participate in a church community, manifesting spiritual growth and spiritual maturity as defined by traditional Biblical Standards
    • Adheres to Portland Rescue Mission's Statement of Faith and Code of Ethics
    • A personal ethos and work ethic that reflects Portland Rescue Mission’s ministry culture – Highly Relational, Christ-Centered, Joyful Servant
    • Competency and comfortability in using support software such as client databases, Excel, Outlook, and other office tools
    • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted
