    Shenandoah University is accepting applications for a Research and Instructional Services Librarian to join the staff at the Alson H. Smith, Jr. Library. This is a full time, 12-month benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester, VA.

    The University also has instructional locations at the Winchester Medical Center, and in Leesburg and Fairfax, VA. The University Library supports academic degrees at each of those locations and various online programs and courses.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Design and assess innovative online learning modules and tutorials for incorporation into the library’s website, Library Guides (Springshare LibGuides), and the campus online learning platform (Canvas) with an eye toward transformational learning.
    • With an emphasis on web-based instruction, this position is a member of the library instruction team.
    • Collaborate with librarians, faculty, student support services, instructional designers, writing and quantitative skills tutors, and other campus partners to support student learning.
    • Coordinate and provide input to maintain and improve the Library web site and related library web services and social media accounts, including regularly evaluating new library tutorials and other tools and products.
    • Oversee, which includes assessing and scheduling, the library chat service.
    • Promote the use and creation of Open Educational Resources (OER).
    • Promote the use of online library collections and services to the University community.
    • Participate in online and in-person reference service on a rotation schedule. Some weekend and evening work possible.

    Librarians at Shenandoah University are faculty members and are expected to meet university requirements for scholarship and service. Librarians are expected to apply for a Career Contract following a five-year probationary period. This position reports to the Director of University Libraries.

     

    Required Skills

    QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library/information science. 
    • At least three years of experience in an academic library setting with an emphasis on online learning.
    • Experience with commonly used academic technologies, course management systems, and e-learning tools (LibGuides, Canvas, Camtasia, etc.)

    REQUIRED SKILLS:

    • Knowledge of pedagogical trends and techniques in information literacy instruction and online learning, including knowledge of learning management systems and video creation and editing.
    • Expertise in providing reference services and information literacy instruction in various formats (in-person, online, synchronous, and asynchronous).
    • Familiarity with principles of universal design and accessibility best practices.

    EXPECTED: 

    • Excellent organizational and analytical skills, as well as communication, presentation, and technology skills. 
    • Awareness of and ability to adapt to current trends in library and information systems. 
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaboratively, and creatively in a rapidly changing environment.
    • Strong service orientation.
    • Ability to work with and respond to a diverse community in a professional, helpful, and respectful manner.
