Tour Company hiring Hosts / Actors / Thespians
Overview
We are looking for performers to educate and entertain parties ranging from 6 to 20 or more people on a ghost tour or daytime history tour! It is an intimate audience and experience. You are the headliner, a one-person show. Our production is theatrical and animated, with many opportunities for vocal inflections and spontaneous ad-lib moments. If you are a performer, you will find this to be intoxicating.
The Tours
We have multiple opportunities available. A bus tour, an Old Town Walking tour, a Gaslamp walking tour, and a Little Italy walking tour. This gives us a couple of months to train you and then it onto the show!! Full disclosure - in the unlikely case of Covid coming back (or whatever disaster), that could prevent us from touring.
I can tell you about the tours, and you can pick the one(s) you prefer. Once trained, you can also access the other tours if you wish.
Hours
We operate in the evening hours (usually around 7, though we may add a 5 pm over the summer) for the ghost tours and the day hours for the history tours. Our shows are generally an hour and a half to two hours long. You'll want to show up early to prepare for the audience, so the average event will be around 2.5 hours. We have shows almost every day. The position is very part-time, and you can expect to perform between 2 - 6 shows a week, give or take. It is not meant to replace your day job. Still, it would instead get you some sound supplemental income, fun, and performing experience. It really is a blast, and the money is excellent.
For the first years, the pay is $50 per tour plus tips, with the average total tips being $40 per tour. The lowest tip we have on record is 4 cents, and the highest is $195. How many tips you get is a bit of the luck of the draw (how many people are on your tour and how tippy they are) and the power of your performance.
The Performance
This is an opportunity to learn and perform a two-hour script, which means you will be talking 95% of the time and interacting all the time. You'll find the script combines historical facts, improv, and jokes. Once you have the script down, you'll be able to bring your style and flare to it. Some props are used in the scripts at certain events, but nothing too complicated. Clients will have access to you during your shows and be able to ask you questions, so you will want to be friendly and open to those interactions.
Though the script is the anchor of our performances, know that each group and each tour you do will have its own flavor and feeling. Therefore, no two are the same. As a result, you won't get bored or burnt out.
Misc
We tour San Diego, and you'll get a mixture of tourists (mostly American) and locals. You can expect to get tips; of course, the better their experience, the higher your tips usually go.
Please only apply if you are interested in performing throughout the year. It'll take some effort for us to train you and for you to learn the script (great acting practice). Still, once we have it, you'll be addicted, and with this in mind, you'll want to be able to commit to the tour for some time in the future.
The training process takes effort; on average, it takes someone about a month or two to memorize the 40-page script and get their own shows. You get the script in thirds and have 20 days to learn each third. However, once you make it through, all the hosts will tell you this is a fantastic job, and you make more money in your 2 hours than 90% of other jobs, plus you have a fantastic time. Once you get past the training, it is absolutely incredible.
We love our employees and are very flexible. As long as you have some availability (weekends are the busiest), we will work around your schedule and fit you in where you can fit. This is the perfect opportunity for an actor or talented extrovert to have an additional source of income and fun.
Thank you. Looking forward to touring with you!- Brian

COVID-19 considerations:
The initial interview will be remote. Then, if we all decide to move on, we will have a Covid-responsible in-person audition/interview.Other Tour CompaniesI have heard from some people we have interviewed that other ghost tours are hiring. As I write this here is what makes us different.1. We are the local San Diego ghost tour; we only do San Diego - Our competitors are national companies with no roots in SD. They don't care about SD except for what money it can make them.2. We pay the most - we have hired people from competing tours, and they tell me that we pay the most, and they get better tips with us.3. We value our employees - this is a collaboration, and your input can directly influence the company. Plus, we are a family and care about you. These national companies see you as meat. I can have you talk to their past employees.4. We are authentic - our competitors have steal scripts and tell false stories. A general lack of integrity.5. We give you a signing bonus - You train for free with our competitors. If you make it through our training (you have to), we will give you a generous signing bonus.Do know that our training is the most intense out of our competitors. Think of it as acting/hosting boot camp, you make it through, and you will be bona fide!I mention this because our competitor's employees have contacted me with horror stories of working for them. Plus, I care about you and San Diego, and it is upsetting that these types of companies can trash our city just for a dollar.
