    Position Summary:
    We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Health Information Management Coding Specialist IV.

    In this role, the successful candidate analyzes medical records, extracts clinical, pathological, therapeutic and epidemiologic data for Inpatient and/or Outpatient records in accordance with established ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT-4 coding principles and guidelines. In addition, meets Medical Center, Financial, Third Party Payer, Federal and State regulatory standards.

    Job Responsibilities:

    * Demonstrates knowledge of the organizational Vision and Mission statements as well as Goals and incorporates them into the performance of duties.
    * Performs high level coding reviews for quality related measures.
    * Codes and/or analyzes records of several different account types including Inpatient, Outpatient, and Rehabilitation
    * Provides assistance with chart audits requiring DRG and APC validation
    * Acts as a resource for less experienced coders
    * Reviews referrals from external vendors if required
    * Responds to inquiries from external customers/departments
    * Works on special projects as assigned
    * Reports coding issues and trends to managers
    * Handles CDI, Coding, and other data related issues that result from peer review organization activities
    * Analyzing Data-Inpatient - Reviews and analyzes inpatient medical record documentation from the patients visit. Abstracts pertinent clinical information (i.e. diagnostic and procedural information) and other related patients and physicians data needed for statistical information. Determines appropriate coding of clinical data in accordance with coding clinic, Federal and State Diagnostic Related Groupings (DRGs) classification guidelines and departmental guidelines. Codes clinical information in accordance with ICD-9-CM methodology.
    * Analyzing Data-Outpatient - Reviews and analyzes outpatient medical record documentation from the patients visit. Abstracts pertinent clinical information (i.e. diagnostic and procedural information) and other related patient and physician data needed for statistical information. Determines appropriate coding of clinical data in accordance with coding clinic, Federal, State and departmental guidelines. Codes clinical information in accordance with ICD-9-CM/CPT-4 methodology for patient reporting.
    * Analyzing Data-Rehabilitation - Adheres to the policies and procedures of the Medical Center and department concerning safety, rules of conduct, etc. as outlined in the Employee Staff Handbook. Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties, asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources/materials to ensure accuracy.
    * Performs other duties as assigned.
    

    Minimum Qualifications:
    To qualify you must have a Demonstrated proficiency in medical record analysis and ICD-10/CPT-4 coding methodology
    At least one of the following is required: Certified Professional Coder (CPC-P OR CPC-H) OR Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) OR Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) OR Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) OR Certified Outpatient Coder (COC).
    Minimum of 5 years coding experience in an acute care hospital collecting, classifying, coding and reporting clinical data
    Thorough understanding of coding guidelines and ability to use appropriate reference materials
    Demonstrated ability to solve problems, work independently, and/or additional responsibilities
    Effective communication skills
    Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Bachelors degree in Health Information Management or related field
    Proficiency in more than one area of coding
    Experience using EPIC electronic health record
    Experience using 3M computer assisted encoder

    NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $81,325.15 - $81,900.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
