NEEDED: Heavy Equipment Operator
LOCATION: COLUMBUS CIVIC CENTER 400 4th St, Columbus, GA 31901
HOURS: As Needed/ Event Driven, 7 days a week, Monday-Sunday, 12:00 AM – 12:00 PM
DRESS CODE: Black or brown shoes and black pants

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operates heavy and light equipment such as compactors, motor graders, bull dozers, loaders, excavators; operates various hand tools.
- Maintains dirt roads with motor grader to ensure easy passage of vehicles and proper drainage of rainwater.
- Repairs road shoulders using motor grader.
- Sets and reads grade stakes to construct roads, parking lots, building pads, landfills, and sediment ponds.
- Assists other divisions in laying pipes, repairing erosion on slopes, demolishing buildings, and other activities as needed.
- Supervises inmate laborers and trains others as needed.
- Carries out a continuous effort to improve operations, work processes, and works cooperatively and jointly to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the tools and equipment employed in the operation of a landfill.
- Knowledge of the regulations and policies utilized in the supervision of inmate laborers.
- Skills in the operation of heavy and specialized equipment.
- Skills in reading construction plans and grade stakes.
- Skills in oral and written communication.
Educational and Training Requirements:
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- This position is required to supervise state inmate labor.
- Must pass the Department of Corrections three-day certification within the time frame required by this department, which is normally six months but may be altered.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- A Commercial Driver's License is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping.
- Occasionally lifts heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.
- Work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.
- May be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, irritating chemicals, contagious or infectious diseases, and machinery with moving parts.
- Requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
