    OVERVIEW: Hercules Medical Group is seeking a qualified Mission Flight Surgeon for its work with Axiom Space.  Axiom Space is the commercial leader in human spaceflight and on-orbit research & manufacturing services, steered by a team of experts and guided by the vision of a thriving home in space that benefits every human, everywhere. Axiom provides unprecedented access to the International Space Station today while building and operating its successor – the world’s first international commercial space station – to improve life on Earth and foster possibilities beyond it.  Our mission-driven team is seeking a bold and dynamic Mission Flight Surgeon who is preoccupied with big questions: Where do we go from here? What are the limits of innovation and exploration? How do we continue to evolve as a species?

    SUMMARY: The Mission Flight Surgeon will be responsible for medical support and direct care of assigned Axiom astronauts throughout all phases of a mission to ensure their health and safety. They will also play a key role in the development and maintenance of the medical operations plan, medical system, research and monitoring protocols, and technology. Mission Flight Surgeons will work with a diverse team of technical specialists and engineers internally and externally while developing Axiom capabilities in preparation to successfully execute Axiom’s mission.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Support preflight phase which includes but is not limited to medical screening, interviews, testing, expert consultations, and aeromedical certification process; support of crew training; planning for the inflight phase; participation in prelaunch planning and readiness reviews; Health Stabilization Program; and launch support with potential contingency operations.
    • Support inflight phase which includes but is not limited to regular private medical conferences with the crew, clinical care by telemedicine as needed, programmatic and mission control support, and medical monitoring for extravehicular activities.
    • Support crew landing and the postflight phase which includes but is not limited to clinical care, crew reconditioning, debriefs, and preparation of a mission summary for each crewmember.
    • Work with diverse teams to design, integrate, and implement a complex medical system.
    • Support research including health data collection before, during, and after human spaceflight missions.
    • Serve as the aerospace medicine technical expert for human spaceflight activities
    • Develop and coordinate space medicine flight operations with technical, operations, and programmatic parties
    • Assist with the planning and execution of pre-launch and inflight disease prevention

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    • A degree in medicine (M.D. or D.O.) and completion of an ACGME or AOA-accredited program of postgraduate specialty training
    • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Aerospace Medicine and a clinical specialty (e.g., internal medicine, emergency medicine, family medicine)
    • Complete flight surgeon training through formal pathway if not completed already
    • Texas State and Florida State medical license or ability to obtain within 6 months of being hired
    • U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency license
    • Current Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Advanced Trauma Life Support certification 
    • Familiarity with NASA medical operations
    • Current or past ISS Program Multilateral Space Medicine Board Crew Surgeon certification and NASA mission control console certification preferred
    • Knowledge, familiarity, and experience working with Soyuz, SpaceX, and/or Boeing human-rated spacecraft preferred
    • Training or experience in sports medicine, wilderness medicine, polar medicine, telemedicine, dive medicine, aircraft mishap and accident investigation preferred

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Work Environment: Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.
    • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.

     PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time). May require lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. (5% of the time).

    • Demonstrated medical integration skills and experience
    • Knowledge and awareness of NASA and Medical regulations for astronaut safety and health
    • Understanding of flight rules for crew safety
    • Knowledge of NASA requirements and ability to interface with appropriate NASA organizations
    • Knowledge and experience working with medical data and HIPAA
    • Extraordinarily organized, able to prioritize and follow through on all work
