TITLE: High School Academic Counselor
FLSA STATUS: Exempt (Full Time/ 12 month employee)
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
INCENTIVE: $3,500 Signing Bonus (Certified Teachers Only)
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL DO
The way of working should be consistent with the “Cornerstone Leadership Model,” exhibiting the skills of the Self-aware Strategist, Creative Problem-Solver, Restorative Relationship-Builder, Collaborative Team-Member, Centered Soul, Courageous Role Model. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Academic Guidance:
- Develop and review individualized academic plans with students.
- Conduct transcript audits to ensure students meet graduation requirements.
- Scheduling and schedule changes for students as needed.
- Provide support for students transitioning into high school, between grade levels, and post-graduation.
Career and College Readiness:
- Guide students through the college application process, including financial aid and scholarship applications.
- Administer career assessments and discuss results with students.
- Organize college fairs, visits, and workshops for students and parents.
- Help students develop short- and long-term career goals.
Social and Emotional Support:
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions to address personal, social, and behavioral challenges.
- Identify at-risk students and connect them with appropriate support services or interventions.
- Mediate conflicts among students and foster a positive school culture.
- Serve as a liaison between students, families, and external mental health resources when necessary.
Administrative and Compliance Duties:
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and interventions.
- Prepare formal graduation requirement notifications for seniors.
- Ensure compliance with state and district policies related to counseling, testing, and confidentiality.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to support school-wide initiatives and student success.

HERE’S WHY WE WILL LOVE YOU
- You have earned a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Education or area of concentration (MDE alternative path to certification accepted)
- Current State of Michigan certification in area of concentration
- You have previous experience working directly with children and enjoy working with them
- You have demonstrated computer skills (MS Word, Web Navigation, etc.) and are not intimidated by technology
- You love building positive rapport with staff, students, parents and others
- You possess strong written and verbal communication skills
- You know how to bring your own brand of creativity and passion to your work in order to enhance learning.
- You are able to successfully manage a classroom of students to foster an environment of learning and development
- You have the ability to plan engaging individual and group activities that stimulate growth and learning for each student
- You are flexible in terms of taking teaching assignments across the network (not limited to a single school or class)
