The ****Fireman **** position is a part-time opportunity to join our Railroad Operations team. During Greenfield Village operations (April through October) this position is responsible for the safe operation, firing and monitoring of boilers on historical locomotives and associated machinery in a manner that ensures the safety of self, crew, passengers and equipment. During non-operational season (November through March) assists with the maintenance and preservation of the locomotives or other assigned artifacts or machinery.

Essential Responsibilities
Ensure the safe operation of high-pressure boilers, artifacts, and machinery in accordance with specified state codes and established policies and procedures. Maintains the appropriate water level and steam pressure during daily operation of the locomotive.
Responsible for operational status which includes starting fire, loading coal, filling tender with water, cleaning boiler tubes and ash pans, and adding boiler treatment chemicals.
Perform basic maintenance and inspection activities to ensure artifacts are maintained in safe condition. This includes the inspection and/or testing of firebox, injectors, air-compressors. Reports any mechanical or logistical problems to the Chief Mechanical Officer of the railroad.
Maintains the cab and boiler areas in clean and uncluttered condition paying close attention to potential safety hazards. Maintains assigned inventories of tools and supplies. Inventories and procures fire up wood for the locomotive.
Maintains constant watch for pedestrians and vehicular traffic at public grade crossings. Is responsible for relaying grade crossing and automatic block signals to the engineer following established guidelines and safety precautions.
Works with engineer to insure the safe, timely and courteous operation of the assigned locomotive. Assists the engineer as directed.
Acts as a team player and provides expertise within the team and with other teams as appropriate. Contributes to the effective team management of all problems, issues, and opportunities

Your qualifications:
Must be able to pass examinations covering - City of Dearborn High Pressure Boiler Operators License; GVRR Railroad Safety Class / test; GVRR Railroad Signals Class / test; GVRR Locomotive Fireman's Exam; Injector Test.
Shop environment as well as outdoors in all weather. This is a physical position that will require constant standing, stooping, handling and grasping, as well as frequent lifting and occasional carrying, pushing, and pulling.
