Job Purpose & Position Overview:
This position is for an advanced speaker or active language learner of the Ho-Chunk language to serve as a classroom instructor for the program. The instructor will plan and implement language revival activities in the classroom setting. The instructor will enthusiastically participate in program language learning activities when possible or as directed, and support fellow staff and fulfill grant requirements. Incumbent will work a 40-hour work-week depending on schedules and personal intent.
Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Demonstrates the Winnebago Tribe’s core mission, vision, and values.
Teach the language in regular and immersion classroom setting to high school, collegiate and all levels of students as directed.
Perform fundamental teaching tasks including, but not limited to, planning lessons, designing learning tasks or activities, and classroom management.
Participate in teaching methodology in-services and trainings for teachers, learning methodologies and strategies for language teaching.
Participate in Ho-Chunk language training activities as a learner.
Assist with further development of the Ho-Chunk language curriculum.
Design and create materials and teaching aids suitable for learners, including digital materials.
Serve as a Ho-Chunk language resource for the local schools.
Design syllabus and course instruction for each designated classroom.
Translate English language materials into Ho-Chunk (vice versa), and serve as an all-around Ho-Chunk language & cultural resource.
Mentor an emerging Ho-Chunk speaker (Language Apprentice) as requested.
Assist in planning Ho-Chunk language proficiency tests.
Participate in Ho-Chunk language assessments as a learner.
Work toward proficiency in reading and writing the Ho-Chunk language utilizing the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and related keyboarding.
Participate in transcribing Ho-Chunk recordings into a written, digital format.
Participate in Program community events as requested.
Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior at all times.
Demonstrate effective communication, decision-making, leadership, critical and analytical thinking, research skills, information and computer literacy, strategic planning, problem-solving, and time management skills.
Interact with the general public, students, and other tribal employees with tact, courtesy, respect, objectivity, and maturity.
Work under general supervision of the Curriculum Coordinator and Instruction Coordinator.
Submit required reports in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications/Skills:
Must be an advanced speaker or active learner of the Ho-Chunk language.
Must have a reasonable mastery of the English language and be able to write independently.
Must be willing to submit a background check as mandated by the Tribal Policies and Procedures of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.
Must possess a willingness to work with Program staff and teachers from the schools on pronunciation and structure of the language.
Must have intimate knowledge of tribal values, social customs, material culture, and other aspects of Ho-Chunk culture, or desire to learn.
Must be willing to receive training on teaching methodologies and take an active role in improving teaching skills.
Must be able to work with little supervision in completing the goals and objectives of the program.
Must be willing to work with children.
Must have reliable transportation and be insurable or maintain insurance.
Computer literacy and proficiency in the IPA writing system will be considered a plus.
Education Preference:
High School Diploma is required
Training Requirements:
Must be willing to pursue professional certification and/or training as directed
Physical Requirements:
Normal to light office work which includes the ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment.
While performing daily duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen.

Ability to work as part of a team and/or with minimal to no supervision.
Language Requirements:
Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.
