    Job Title Instrument Repair Technician

    Job Description:

    Specializes in the maintenance, repair, and restoration of violins, violas, cellos, and bass. This role requires a high level of craftsmanship, an understanding of musical acoustics, and a keen eye for detail.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Diagnose and repair structural issues such as cracks, loose seams, and warped parts.

    Replace or adjust components, including bridges, soundposts, pegs, fingerboards, and strings.

    Address varnish damage, touch-ups, and refinishing needs.

    Fit and adjust bridges, soundposts, and tailpieces to optimize sound quality.

    Tune instruments to proper pitch and test for tonal quality.

    Restore antique or damaged violins to their original condition, preserving historical and monetary value.

    Replace missing or degraded parts using period-appropriate materials and techniques.

    Consult with musicians to understand their instrument needs and preferences.

    Provide recommendations for care, maintenance, and upgrades.

    Ensure all repairs and adjustments meet high-quality craftsmanship standards.

    Maintain detailed records of repairs and restoration work.

    Maintain and sharpen specialized tools, including chisels, knives, and planes.

    Source and manage high-quality materials, such as tonewoods, varnishes, and adhesives.

    Required Skills and Qualifications:

    Technical Expertise: Proficient in woodworking, luthier techniques, and fine handcraftsmanship. Understanding of violin acoustics and structure.

    Attention to Detail: Ability to perform meticulous work, often on small or delicate components.

    Customer Service Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with musicians.

    Problem-Solving Abilities: Skill in diagnosing and addressing various repair and sound quality issues.

    Experience and Education: Formal training or apprenticeship in luthiery or instrument repair (preferred). Hands-on experience in violin repair and restoration.
