Interim Laboratory Manager- IA
American Consultants is looking for an interim lab manager for a facility outside of Mt. Pleasant, IA. They will be required to do bench work in the event of staff vacations. They need someone ASAP.
Position Overview:
The Interim Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing the operations of the laboratory within a critical access hospital. This includes managing daily laboratory activities, ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining high-quality standards in testing and reporting, and leading a team of laboratory professionals. The role is critical to sustaining the hospital’s commitment to patient safety and quality care while providing leadership during the interim period.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Operations Management:
- Supervise and manage laboratory staff, including hiring, scheduling, training, and performance evaluations.
- Oversee daily operations, ensuring efficient workflow, accuracy, and timely completion of laboratory tests.
- Act as the primary point of contact for laboratory-related issues and interdepartmental collaboration.
- Implement and monitor standard operating procedures (SOPs) and policies.
Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure laboratory compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies (e.g., CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, or state health departments).
- Maintain accurate documentation and participate in audits, inspections, and proficiency testing programs.
- Monitor quality control programs and troubleshoot any deviations or deficiencies.
Technical Oversight:
- Ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and functionality of laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Provide guidance on technical procedures and assist in resolving complex cases or testing issues.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies or methods to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Budget and Resource Management:
- Monitor laboratory budget, including supplies, equipment, and staffing needs.
- Ensure cost-effective use of resources while maintaining high-quality standards.
- Coordinate with vendors and procurement teams to manage inventory and negotiate contracts.
Education and Training:
- Foster a culture of continuous learning by providing ongoing training and professional development opportunities for staff.
- Ensure all staff are up to date on certifications and licensure as required.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
- Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) by ASCP, AMT, or equivalent.
- Must meet CLIA requirements for a Laboratory Director in a high-complexity laboratory.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in clinical laboratory operations.
- Previous leadership or management experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in a critical access hospital.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures, quality control, and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Proficient in laboratory information systems (LIS) and other healthcare technology.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse teams.
