    Intern (GCSC)

    Reports To : Manager of Events, Client Services, Jason Abady

    Status : Part Time (average 20 hours/week)

    Length in Internship: Mid-May to late August in conjunction with the student's academic year

    FLSA : Non-Exempt

    Location : In person at our Columbus, Arena District office

    Travel : 20% to 30% locally to offsite meetings and events within Columbus

    Pay Rate: $15/hour

    Overview:**
    The GCSC professional intern will have the opportunity to work with staff members in all areas of the organization on a variety of tasks, projects and events throughout their internship. These areas include marketing and promotions, event management, communications, corporate and community partnerships, strategic research and business development. The internship experience depends upon the current GCSC projects and sporting events taking place in the Greater Columbus region.

    By joining the Sports Commission, you will be part of a team that makes sporting events successful in the city of Columbus. We bring sports events, fans and participants to Columbus and we've been doing it since 2002. We do it to improve the quality of life of people that call Columbus home. We do it raise the profile of Columbus as a sports city. We do it to impact the people and economy in Central Ohio. Most of all we do it for the love of the game.

    The Greater Columbus Sports Commission is an LLC of Experience Columbus, a 501(c)(6), and oversees the Greater Columbus Sports Foundation, a 501(c)(3), and operates with its own board of commissioners, budget, brand, office, web and media presence, fundraising and other elements.

    The Work you will do:
    ** Assist Events department on internal and external events with supply distribution, promotional activities, volunteer recruitment and administration. Onsite activations and management during major events, which include the NC Men's Volleyball Championship, May 2025; Community Youth Camp, June 2025; Community Cup, September 2025.

    • Assist the Marketing and Communications departments on projects including social media content and reporting, board reports, newsletters, press releases, etc.
    • Assist the Business Development department with competitive set research and various projects.
    • Assist the Partnerships team with prospect research and sales.
    • Will be responsible for researching, creating and presenting an internship project outlined by the GCSC.
    • Assist with special projects individually, or within a department.
    • Other administrative duties as assigned to help the team.
    • Attend Experience Columbus or Sports Commission community and industry functions.
    • Demonstrate a commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion by ensuring the inclusivity and accessibility of events and services.
    • Some events may require evenings or weekends.

    Qualifications and Background we are looking for:
    Enrolled in or recently (within 6 months) completed an associate or bachelor's degree in hospitality management, Sports Management, Events Business Administration or related discipline (preference given to those rising third- and fourth-year students).

    • Experience in the following areas below (either through education, work experience or a combination of both).

      • Sports, Hospitality, Events, Travel or Service industry
      • Working on a small team, office setting or environment.
      • Working independently on projects or tasks and within a team
      • Leading tasks, teams or projects
    • Excellent attention to detail and a self-starter.

    • Eager to learn and grow, has a can-do attitude, and an affinity for sports and/or tourism and hospitality.

    • Team player, focused on strong relationships built on respect, trust and sharing of knowledge.

    • Proficient using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, Internet, and comfortable using social media in a professional or academic setting.

    • Comfortable working independently and in cross functional teams.

    • High level of comfort working with visitors and community partners.

    • Ability to take direction from others, ask questions when needed, and apply feedback.

    • Well-developed time management skills with an ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

    • Demonstrates flexible thinking, a growth mindset and resilience.

    • Passionate about the product (Columbus and Sports) and motivated to exceed expectations.

    • Committed to learning and applying Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility principles throughout the roles

    • Ability to travel to and from site locations in Columbus on time with reliable transportation.

    • The organization requires all employees to obtain and maintain the Experience Columbus Insider (ECI) accreditation.

    • Nonlocal interns must make their own arrangements for housing.

    • Minimum age of 18 years old.

    • Ability to monitor and view computer screens.

    • Frequent talking and/or listening with team or external people.

    • Regular sitting at a desk.

    • Standing or sitting during long periods during event registration.

    • Occasionally lifting 10 – 15 lbs.
