    ORGANIZATION: Earth Matter NY Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, and application of composting in and around New York City. Earth Matter NY seeks to reduce the organic waste misdirected into the garbage stream by encouraging neighbor participation and leadership in composting. Earth Matter NY is a host site for the community composting processing and education, funded by the New York City Council.

    THE POSITION: Island Education Facilitator

    Earth Matter NY seeks an enthusiastic individual with compost knowledge and organics processing experience for a full-time position. The Coordinator is employed by Earth Matter NY and reports to the Compost Project Administrative Manager. The goal of this position is to support relationships with Governors Island partners and collaborators. This person's primary responsibility is supporting Earth Matter NY with facilitation of compost education, including all aspects of City-funded, in-person, public, and volunteer activities. These responsibilities require the candidate to be available for two-three weekends/month from May through October. The 40-hour work week will be spread so that there is time-off during the week if working a weekend.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    ● Co-lead public volunteer and outreach activities such as curating a public workshop series, workdays, and tours at the Compost Learning Center (CLC)

    ● Facilitate Governors Island-related public and special activities/events requests and organize programming, including public partner trainings with broader team input.

    ● Support Earth Matter vision by fostering deeper on-Island relationships, helping with public events and messaging

    ● Co-Manage group relationships via email, phone, video calls, and organize “day-of” work day, tour, workshop, and event aspects including planning activities and supplies, ferry reservations, set up and clean up, escorting and facilitation/education of groups

    ● Act as an overall ambassador of Earth Matter

    ● Attend Earth Matter staff meetings and Compost Project-related meetings

    ● Perform additional duties as determined by Earth Matter NY

    SKILLS/ABILITIES:

    ● Strong facilitator i.e. organize internally and take the lead in a large external group of any age/ability.

    ● Education and curriculum development as well as strong messaging skills.

    ● Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with the public, solo, and on a team, in various settings.

    ● Knowledge of and commitment to composting and recycling efforts, especially in the NYC landscape.

    ● Willingness to work outdoors in all seasons and on some weekends.

    ● Ability to lift at least 40 pounds and perform physically strenuous tasks related to composting.

    ● Self starter, good sense of humor, flexibility, and openness to learning

    ● Comfortable with and sensitive to a wide range of people and environments.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    ● 1-3 years work experience; professional educator experience, deep knowledge of compost, sustainability, and environmental health preferred

    ● Experience with basic office software such as Google Drive

    ● Bachelor’s Degree preferred

    SALARY: $50-55,000/yr. plus base health insurance, commuter benefits, PTO
