JMT’s Allentown PA Office is growing and seeks a motivated individual who desires increasing responsibilities across a variety of bridge and transportation structure projects at the local, state, and federal level. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting professional engineers primarily with the design of bridges and miscellaneous highway structures for transportation projects of varying complexity in accordance with AASHTO, PennDOT, PA Turnpike, and other transportation client specifications; preparing and checking plans prepared by others for conformance with specifications and standards; designing and detailing structural components; preparing construction cost estimates and specifications; and reviewing shop drawings. In addition, the successful candidate will perform existing condition assessments and inspections of bridge and transportation structures in support of developing reports and repair and rehabilitation recommendations. A valid driver’s license is required.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Perform engineering tasks in the structural engineering field through the application of relevant design codes, standards, and design-oriented computer programs
- Perform general civil/structural engineering tasks to support various project managers, as required
- Perform design computations
- Design projects in accordance with client specifications and guidelines, using design software and drawing tools
- Develop construction cost estimates
- Assist in the preparation of engineering documents for advertisement and construction
- Prepare and compile contract plans, specifications and estimates
- Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality standards
- Participate in plan and shop drawing reviews
- Draft plans using MicroStation or AutoCAD
- Assist in the field performing bridge and structure inspections
- Write and review bridge inspection reports

Required Skills
- Knowledge of structural design principles for steel, reinforced concrete, and prestressed concrete for structure components

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including WORD and EXCEL
- Ability to write, speak, and communicate clearly
Required Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from ABET accredited engineering program
- 0-6 years' experience and commitment to working towards and obtaining Professional Engineering license
Preferred Experience
- Engineer-In-Training certification
- Experience in performing in-service bridge safety inspections preferred.
- PennDOT Certified Bridge Safety Inspector (CBSI) certification preferred.
- Experience using MicroStation and AutoCAD
- Experience with AASHTO LRFD bridge design.
- Proficiency with various structural design software especially various PennDOT software packages.
- Familiarity with iForms and ability to produce/review inspection reports to meeting PennDOT criteria
- Experience and ability to navigate/understand AASHTO reference material to source proper sections for design requirements and to meet client criteria
Working Conditions
Work is performed within a general office environment 75% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment. Approval of remote work is at the supervisor’s discretion after successful completion of a probationary period.
Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
