Job Description
** Purpose**
To provide service, line construction and maintenance of the Cooperative’s electric distribution system. To master in the construction, operation, and maintenance of overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities. More specifically, this level of lineman is expected to be a competent craftsman who can provide the needed services for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the electrical distribution system. The Journeyman Lineman is expected to provide supervision to and assist Apprentice Lineman and Groundman.
** Line Condition Limitations**
A Journeyman Lineman is expected to be able to perform all types of electric distribution line work without supervision. The Journeyman Lineman may be delegated the responsibility for supervising the work of others as Area Foreman.
** Demonstrated Abilities and Practical knowledge**
- Cooperative safety rules.
- Must be prepared with and willing to wear all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. All PPE must meet safety standards as required.
- Identification of materials, tools and equipment.
- Proper handling and use of materials, tools, and equipment.
- Framing poles.
- RUS specifications and basic construction units.
- Climbing poles.
- Driving and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Understanding operation of aerial devices and diggers.
- Mapping systems.
- Operation of radio.
- Meeting all state requirements to operate Cooperative vehicles, such as CDL license, or any other qualifications.
- National Electric Safety Code, where applicable.
- Procedures for forms, records , and reporting.
- Installation of distribution transformers, security lights, service drops, secondaries , and conductors.
- Staking sheet interpretation.
- Single phase and polyphase transformer connections.
- Sizing transformers, conductors , and fuses.
- System layout, feeds, and tagging procedures, as prescribed by the Cooperative.
- Installation and repair of transformers, OCRs, sectionalizers, regulators, capacitors , instrument transformers and recording/indicating meters.
- Familiar with hot sticking procedures, rubber gloving, and hot-line work.
- Load and voltage checks.
- Patrol and inspection of transmission, distribution , and underground systems.
- Attend trainings such as underground school, hot-line school, and substation school, if required by Cooperative.
- Specifications and procedures for underground construction and maintenance.
- Substation inspection and maintenance.
- Transmission and distribution switching, sectionalizing , and fusing.
- All types of metering connections.
- Trouble –shooting overhead and underground systems.
- Maintenance and operation of regulators and maintenance of OCRs and sectionalizers.
- Maintenance and operation of capacitors.
** Essential Job Duties**
- Be able to perform all duties described above.
- Possess and use the skills and knowledge necessary to perform all phases of line work, including the construction, operation and maintenance of the distribution and transmission systems.
- Instruct Apprentice Lineman during various phases of their training.
- Set a positive example of safe practices for others.
- Follow Cooperative procedures and ensure that job-related records, reports, and other paperwork are correct, complete and on time.
- Maintain current craftsman by keeping skills and knowledge current.
- Understands and upholds Board approved policies.
- Complete other job duties as assigned.
** Reports to**
The Journeyman Lineman is under the direct supervision of the Line Foreman if assigned to a crew.
