The mission of KEY Project is to nurture and promote the cultural, environmental, social, economic and recreational well-being of the Kualoa-Heʻeia area by providing a vital grassroots civic resource that effectively serves the needs of our diverse multicultural community. KEY provides programs and services touching all ages at our multi-purpose community center in Waiheʻe Valley on Oʻahu.
Job Purpose
The purpose of the Climate Champion - Nursery and Māla Kākoʻo is to facilitate the distribution of plant starts, in conjunction with education support, to the Windward community for building a future of resilient agriculture practices and coastlines. Through teamwork and collaboration, this position builds on the foundation of KEY’s legacy and values to sustain quality services, programs, and events throughout our service area (Kaneohe to Kahuku).
Duties and Responsibilities
● Serves as the primary lead in executing onsite nursery management on a daily basis.
● Gathers, develops and distributes relevant educational materials via multiple avenues, including but not limited to, electronic means, in person facilitation, and hard copy documents.
● Assists in the ongoing and regular maintenance of the KEY Project Māla through gardening and landscaping methods.
● Organizes and attends occasional weekend workdays and workshops as assigned.
● Meets regularly with Community Development Coordinator - ʻĀina & Resilience to identify and prioritize relevant assignments, duties, and tasks.
● Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Qualified and selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a background check.
Minimum qualifications required include:
● Basic knowledge of sustainable agriculture practices and techniques
● Minimum one (1) year experience working with youth
● Comfort with outdoor spaces and work environments
● Capability to perform ongoing physical labor
● Ability to maintain tools and equipment with confidence to perform minor repairs as needed ● Positive attitude and ability to work well with others
Preferred qualifications:
● General office skills
● Have general cultural knowledge of Waiheʻe and surrounding ahupuaʻa.

Working Conditions
This is a Temporary On-Call position (May through August, 19 hours or less per week) and will generally be performed during organizational business hours with occasional evening and weekend shifts as needed to support programming. Job functions will be primarily performed outdoors with exposure to various temperatures, weather conditions, and potentially uneven terrain or vegetation. Secondary duties may be performed indoors in an office environment. A majority of work will be done onsite with periodic attendance at offsite locations required.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to walk, move, squat, stand in a variety of positions and locations throughout the campus, the ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds, and the ability to maintain spatial awareness of surroundings.
