The facilities engineering responsibilities include campus-wide space planning efforts, capital renewal assessments, and project engineering on construction, renovation and maintenance projects of various size and magnitude. The automation responsibilities include integration, programming, documenting and controlling of existing building automation systems. This position will work closely with the HVAC Supervisor and Energy Coordinator to identify, develop, and implement control strategies that advance energy reduction and/or provide building comfort and performance.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage campus wide space planning as it relates to space inventory and space condition assessment. This involves a campus-wide survey of rooms and a continued effort to maintain the asset data as spaces change over time. Coordinate with registrar's office for classroom data and assignments. Assess space needs, requirements, and space type for all areas of campus. Evaluate under or over utilization by departments. Document findings and results and make recommendations as it relates to strategic goals / initiatives campus wide
- Conduct facilities condition assessments, and collect / analyze data in relation to deferred maintenance items. Develop costs associated with each deferred item. Evaluate existing building current replacement value based on type of construction and type of facility. Meet with maintenance staff to review and understand any additional outstanding deficiencies. Analyze the results, compile as a campus-wide assessment, and update as needed
- Maintain electronic documentation as it relates to building design plans / floor plans. Convert all scanned floor plan drawings to AutoCAD files and keep accurate as space-planning efforts are revised
- Maintain campus utility map. This entails all major utilities routed underground on the campus. Each utility is located in an AutoCAD file and must have constant review and updates as projects occur
- Engineering oversight - review plans / drawings, specifications and submittals for all projects at all stages of design and construction and provide feedback as it relates to the university’s construction specifications / guidelines
- Develop a direct, personal, positive and collaborative working relationship with other departments, faculty and staff and outside consultants, contractors and vendors
- Assist in project estimating and budgeting
- Diagnose and resolve building automation system issues based on feedback from alarms, system performance, and energy initiatives; develop programming solutions and coordinate resolution with in-house technicians and specialists
- Participate in the energy audit process and energy saving control strategies
- Work with the HVAC Supervisor by providing building controls technical expertise in diagnosing building HVAC/controls issues
- Be part of the commissioning team on new or existing buildings to observe or perform functional performance testing
- Review building automation design, components, and sequence of operations on new projects and make recommendations
- Perform all programming changes and set point adjustments in-house, coordinate with control vendors in managing service agreements for software, hardware, and implementing control changes
- Develop, maintain, and update the university's supporting controls documentation
- Verify proper installation, operation and calibration of building control devices
- Communicate known building automation issues to supervisor and work to resolve
- Ability to share knowledge and train amongst facilities departments
- Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- S. degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction management or equivalent
- 5 or more years of experience in engineering, construction, or related field
- Experience in space planning assessments
- Knowledge of HVAC and Mechanical systems
- Able to read and understand mechanical, electrical, and architectural drawings
- Knowledge and understanding of Building Automation Systems
- Proficiency with AutoCAD
- Experience in building condition assessments
- Must have a valid driver’s license and pass all University driving requirements to drive a University vehicle
- Excellent communication skills including writing, public speaking, and computing skills.
- Ability to creatively overcome obstacles. Skilled in working with diverse academic community and the ability to work with individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds.
- Able to work independently, but is an excellent collaborator and team player
- Familiarity with Microsoft office products and project management software scheduling
- Experience in college / university environment
- Experience with Johnson Controls & Automated Logic control systems
