    Job Description

    Successful law firm seeks a full time Law Clerk for our downtown Milwaukee, WI office. This position requires a motivated, detailed, organized professional capable of functioning in a fast-paced, challenging legal environment. Ideal candidates will be recent college graduates who intend or hope to apply for law school, though this background is not required. Please forward a cover letter and resume for consideration.

    Schedule: Monday through Friday, either 8:00am to 4:00pm or 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

    After training period, can work from home one day per week.

    Position Summary:

    As a Law Clerk, you will be primarily tasked with assisting attorneys in all attributes of a case investigation process. Our clerk is responsible for following a filing system and organizing records, such as letters, legal documents, case files, correspondence, invoices, and memoranda according to that system. They locate and retrieve requested files and prepare legal document indices, file folders, and labels. They may be responsible for keeping files up to date. In addition to filing, the law clerk may perform other clerical duties, such as handling mail, faxing, using a copy machine, maintaining a calendar, and managing office equipment. In addition to clerical duties, the law clerk may also act as a courier to make deliveries and pickups within the downtown Milwaukee area. This is primarily a sedentary role, but a potential candidate should be able to lift 50 pounds for duties assigned occasionally.

    Essential Job Functions:

    • Oversee medical and factual investigation with oversight of attorney team, including preparing medical and other authorizations; communicating with opposing law firms and pro se claimants; communicating with medical providers, State and federal agencies, employers, and other parties to secure requested evidence; issuing payments and documenting the costs; updating internal records retrieval system.
    • Open case files.
    • Review and docket mail and other related documents pertaining to the worker’s compensation and GL cases.
    • Maintain daily calendar and computer files. Ensure tasks are completed timely and properly documented.
    • Keeps cases organized by establishing and organizing files; monitoring calendars; meeting deadlines; documenting actions; inputting information into file database and case management software.
    • Ensure filing is up to date.

    Education, Skills, and Qualifications:

    • High school diploma or GED (or equivalent) required; associate or bachelor's degree strongly preferred.
    • 0-2 years of experience supporting a legal office or working in the legal industry.
    • Working knowledge or ability to learn court rules and procedures.
    • Microsoft Word and Outlook experience required; Excel and PowerPoint experience preferred.
    • Outstanding organizational, interpersonal, and administrative skills.
    • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to multi-task.
    • Excellent communication and proofreading skills.
    • Must be self-motivated and able to meet deadlines under pressure.
    • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Excellent organization, planning, attention to detail, and dependability.
    • Firm and client confidentiality required.
