    POSITION: Leisure Services Summer Intern

    DEPARTMENT: Parks

    WORK SCHEDULE: Varied including many weekends and holidays

    SALARY: $15.50/hour

    STATUS: Part-time seasonal

    FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

    DATES: May-August (start and end dates flexible)

    Assists with the planning, preparation, implementation and reporting of various leisure programs and activities including but not limited to canoeing, kayaking, disc golf, fishing, archery, orienteering, and geocaching.

    Assists with the planning and coordination of special projects. This includes but is not limited to kiosk/display development, brochure development, program preparations and decorations.

    Serves as a liaison to outside groups to help coordinate activities and special events within St. Joseph County Parks.

    Responsibilities

    Responsible for assisting/leading the canoe rental operation.

    Designing and promoting leisure programs in the parks.

    Working with all the leisure staff to design, promote, and execute programs.

    Work with groups of all ages while promoting the benefits of the county parks.





    Qualifications

    Must be able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced atmosphere.

    Must work well in a team setting with planning and executing programs.

    Must have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

    Must have adequate transportation to commute between parks when park vehicle is not available.

    Familiarity with computer programs, cash register, and credit card machine.

    Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

    Education/Experience


    Working towards (or possessing) a Baccalaureate Degree in Parks and Recreation, Outdoor Education, Outdoor Recreation, Elementary Education, or related field preferred.

    Hold a For-Hire license or Michigan Chauffer’s license, or be willing to obtain one is preferred.

    Experience in assisting or leading camps for children is a plus.

    Experience with canoes and/or kayaks is a plus.

    Physical Requirements

    **** Incumbent performs duties involving varying weather conditions, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, sitting/walking at will, pushing/pulling objects, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, color depth perception, hearing sounds/communication, speaking clearly, handling/grasping objects. Incumbent maintains considerable contact with the public and may be exposed to irate/difficult persons.

    Must have the ability to lift objects of 50 lbs. or more, including carrying objects up a slope.

    Must be able to hike distances of a mile or more on trails of mixed grades.
