Summary
Listed below are the preferred skills for the Safety Intern. While not all the skills are required to obtain the position, they are areas that the Intern will gain valuable experience in as time progresses working in this role. It is important for the applicant to have a strong desire to learn to obtain this unique Intern opportunity. The intern will be assigned hands-on learning projects relating to day-to-day activities of the department to ensure a safety, healthy, and incident-free work environment. The intern must be a flexible and adaptable team-player, as well as have good communication skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned
* Lead safety improvement project(s) aimed at closing the risk gap and/or cultivating a positive safety culture.
Qualifications

The individual must be a self-starter with the ability to take limited input and direction and achieve the desired goal. Education and/or Experience
Must be actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in environmental, health and safety or related field.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook required.
Must be flexible and adaptable team-player, as well as have good communication skills.
Have a good understanding of OSHA standards.
Strong verbal, written, analytical and interpersonal skills.
Must have positive attitude and good work ethic.
Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
Language Skills
Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Should be able to speak effectively to customers, management and/or other fellow employees of the organization.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical activities that require lifting to 50 pounds, balancing, walking, standing, stooping, and handling tools and materials. Must wear common protective or safety equipment, such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and hard hats while in plant gathering data.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions or foundry/machine shop conditions; this includes potentially loud, hot, dusty areas with moving mechanical machinery.
