JOB OVERVIEW:
We are seeking a well-rounded, team-centered, and process-oriented Microbiologist to join our Michigan team. As a Microbiologist, you will be responsible for performing microbial laboratory testing, including the analyzing, interpreting, and reporting of finalized testing data. This position is full-time, in-lab at our Warren, MI location, with a Wednesday-Saturday, 10–11-hour schedule with available overtime. Training and competency will be provided during a Monday-Friday, with an 8–9-hour schedule until the candidate is determined competent to work independently on the schedule listed above.

The organization’s ideal candidate has demonstrated experience organizing and performing high-volume and multiple assay microbiological workflows to meet the production needs of the laboratory. This includes daily management and performance of production workflows, including preparation of test samples and quality controls for mandated state testing on molecular and culture-based methods, to meet expected turnaround times as well as maintaining an environmental monitoring plan, physical inventory, and quality goals in tandem with other members of the Micro team. Proven experience within an environmental, public health or food sciences laboratory preferred. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively non-negotiable.
MICROBIOLOGIST QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must pass criminal background check.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Must have (3) years professional (non-academic) experience using qPCR/PCR based platform
- Must have (3) years professional (non-academic) experience utilizing culture-based microbiological analysis
- Must have at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in a natural science, to include, but not be limited to, biology, chemistry, or environmental sciences.
- Must have strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently, as needed.
- Must work collaboratively within the Micro Dept and be prepared to serve as a peer-leader within the greater laboratory team environment.
MI MICROBIOLOGIST RESPONSIBILITIES:
The microbiologist is responsible for the testing, quality control, and tracking of cannabis samples submitted for microbiological assays, including but not limited to 3M RAC, RYM & REC Petrifilm, STEC/Salmonella & Aspergillus ssp. on molecular and culture-based methodologies and additional Research & Development (R&D) on qPCR and/or plate-based methods, as requested and applicable to support the laboratory. All members of the microbiological department are responsible for the safe handling, storage, and disposal of microbiological organisms kept within the laboratory and all biohazardous waste produced by the department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Follow policies and procedures for the daily operations and fully comply with state cannabis regulations.
- Adhere to current good documentation practices, cGDP, for the completion of laboratory documents, logs, forms, and worksheets.
- Follow company SOPs, and all rules, regulations, and laws for the transportation, storage, testing and destruction of cannabis and cannabis products.
- Proficiently utilize Microsoft Excel and various laboratory information management systems.
- Work in a timely manner, strives to improve quality and maintain accuracy.
- Appropriate use of personal protective equipment during laboratory activities.
- Participate in and endeavor to complete training and be determined competent for sample collection, preparation, interpretation, and analysis using aseptic techniques.
- Initial and ongoing demonstrated competency of all microbial techniques, as determined by technical audits and successful completion of applicable proficiency testing.
- Participate in and ability to manage daily workflow, including independent sample preparation using aseptic techniques for all test methods trained and determined competent, including compliant documentation of associated forms and logs.
- Demonstrate peer leadership and stewardship for consistent use of aseptic techniques and the safe handling, storage and disposal of Department reagents, supplies, organisms, and waste.
- Maintain physical inventory, including supply management and ordering, on behalf of the department.
- Perform method and instrument validation and/or verifications, as applicable.
- Perform and maintain an environmental monitoring and sanitization plan.
- Perform all other tasks and duties as assigned by supervisor, which may include cannabis sampling and transport.

- The work environment may expose employee to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration.
- The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
- Per state requirements for this industry, the facility is secured by user-specific access and is surveillance by cameras located throughout the laboratory except in restrooms.
