FMI's manufacturing facility has been a leading solutions provider of high temperature materials and composites for more than 50 years, serving the Department of Defense and NASA. The focus in Maine is on multidirectional reinforced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) that enable high-temperature components such as: thermal protection systems, re-entry vehicle nose tips as well as rocket motor throats and nozzles.
Our materials are being used on ground-breaking space initiatives such as the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and the heat shield for NASA's Mars 2020 mission, important missile programs, airfoils in commercial and military jet engines, and as lightweight armor for U.S. military ground vehicles.
**Your role: **FMI **** is seeking a Machining and Metrology Lead Engineer with a passion for building especially as it relates to CNC machining and metrology. In this role you will be helping develop new aerospace product designs as it relates to manufacturing / fabrication and collaborating with some of the most technically advanced customers in the defense and space fields. As the Machining and Metrology Lead , your focus will be on developing new composite manufacturing processes and preparing them for initial production.
Job Responsibilities:
- Work with customers to solve technical manufacturing challenges and provide design for manufacturing input
- Support the evaluation of new capital equipment, provide data to support selection, installation, integration, and commissioning of
- Help manage and qualify the development of new machining and metrology manufacturing processes
- Collaborate with peers, partners and engineering management to ensure seamless coordination of efforts and to resolve issues
- Participate in the preparation of proposals, job quoting and technical evaluation of new work
- Ensure processes are developed in a safe manner in accordance with established procedures and practices
- Perform root cause analysis for process anomalies as well as data analysis to support those efforts and to drive decisions
- Collaborate with vendors and partners in machine repair and optimization
- Design process tooling or collaborate with tool designers and manufacturers
- Develop robust documentation for development processes
- Collaborate with vendors and industry partners in the acquisition and development of manufacturing tools and tooling
** What we need from you:**
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5-10 years minimum applicable experience in aerospace, automotive, medical or industrial manufacturing
- Exemplary work ethic, creative passion for building and attention to detail
- Ability to obtain a Security Clearance
- Familiarity with tooling selection, fixture design, CAD, and metrology
- Technical writing and process documentation experience
- Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing knowledge
_ Preferred:_
- Leadership experience and the ability to manage workflow priorities
- Degree with a focus in Mechanical, Materials or Manufacturing Engineering; High Temperature Carbon or Ceramic Composites; Advanced Manufacturing Processes; or Program Management
- Demonstrated experience in new product development relating to CNC Machining, CMM Programing and / or Aerospace Manufacturing
- Composites manufacturing experience
- Extensive knowledge of CNC and CMM machine operation
- Precision fixture and / or gauge design experience
