    Job Description

    The Machinist Co-Op is a temporary position to develop the skills of a student enrolled in a high school technical trade program, or a skilled trade school, to evaluate their potential for future opportunity at American Hydro.

    Essential Functions Performed by the Position

    Accountabilities:

    • Follows safety rules and requirements
    • Accountable to follow instructions of Machine Shop personnel
    • Demonstrate correct operation of machinery and hand tools
    • Technical Skills - Knowledge of machining processes and procedures. General understanding of inspection equipment, tooling, metal processing, and shop safety
    • Language Skills - Ability to read, and interpret blue prints including dimensional and finish symbols. Ability to effectively present inquiries and respond to questions from engineers, machinists, and others
    • Mathematical - Ability to understand and calculate dimensional and quantity figures in both fractions and decimals. Along with ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
    • Reasoning - Ability to interpret work instructions and procedures. Identify problems, collect information, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
    • Computer – Competent in clocking in and off work routing
    • Physical – must occasionally list and/or move up to 40 pounds
    • Work Environment – comfortable working in loud environment. Required personal protective equipment worn including safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, and ear protection

    Main Responsibilities:

    • Develop understanding of safety requirements to work in large machine shop environment.
    • Obtain exposure and involvement with tasks required for the machinist position.
    • Learn how to operate machines, use hand tools and inspection gages.

    Development Responsibilities:

    • Increase knowledge of industry and machining, contribute to making better the co-op process for future students.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities ****

    • Problem Solving, Oral Communication, Written Communication, Teamwork, Quality Management, Innovation
    • Strong math background, preferable in machine math/shop math
    • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints
    • Experience using a microscope
    • Ability to read measurement equipment such as micrometer, caliper, pressure micrometer

    • Enrollment in a Technical High School or Trade School
