Summary
The History Teacher for grades 5th through 9th is responsible for teaching a comprehensive curriculum in history and social studies, helping students understand historical events, geographic concepts, and the impact of these on the modern world. This role involves fostering critical thinking, encouraging students to engage in historical analysis, and developing their understanding of global and national history. The teacher will collaborate with school staff to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Curriculum Development and Lesson Planning:
* Develop and implement lesson plans that align with state standards for history and social studies, covering topics such as world history, geography, civics, and American history.
* Utilize a variety of teaching strategies to engage students in historical inquiry and analysis, encouraging them to think critically about historical events and their impacts.
* Incorporate multimedia, primary sources, and project-based learning into the curriculum to enhance student understanding of historical concepts.
- Student Assessment and Evaluation:
* Assess students’ knowledge and understanding of historical content through exams, essays, projects, and class participation.
* Provide feedback that helps students improve their historical analysis skills and deepen their understanding of key concepts.
* Monitor student progress and adjust instructional strategies as necessary to ensure student success.
- Classroom Management and Engagement:
* Create a classroom environment that encourages discussion, debate, and critical thinking about historical events and their relevance to today's world.

Work Experience Requirements
- Prior Teaching Experience : Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching history or social studies at the middle school or high school level.
- Classroom Management : Proven ability to engage students in meaningful discussions and maintain a positive and productive learning environment.
- Curriculum Development : Experience in creating and implementing lesson plans that align with academic standards in history, including both world and U.S. history.
- Critical Thinking and Analysis : Ability to foster critical thinking by encouraging students to analyze historical events, perspectives, and sources.
- Technology Integration : Experience incorporating technology, such as multimedia resources, historical simulations, or interactive learning platforms, into history instruction.
Educational and Certification Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree : A Bachelor’s Degree in History, Social Studies Education, or a related field from an accredited institution. Candidates with significant teaching experience (2+ years) may negotiate the academic degree requirement.
- Puerto Rico Department of Education Certification : A valid teaching certification from the Puerto Rico Department of Education to teach history at the middle or high school level is required. Candidates without full certification may qualify for a Provisional License granted by the Puerto Rico Department of Education (DOE). To be eligible for this provisional license, candidates must provide a transcript showing more than 9 credit hours in history or social studies.
- CPR/First Aid Certification : Preferred but not required.
- Ongoing Professional Development : Willingness to participate in continued professional development related to history education, teaching strategies, and student engagement techniques.
