We recently launched and operated the first American lunar lander mission since the Apollo Program. Beyond helping lead America back to the Moon, Astrobotic developed and operates reusable vertical takeoff, vertical landing (VTVL) rockets and continues to advance next-generation VTVL capabilities and advanced rocket engines. Established in 2007, Astrobotic is headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, with a propulsion and test campus in Mojave, CA.

The Mechanical Engineer will develop, build, and test a variety of mechanical systems and structures. These will include (but are not limited to) ground support equipment, primary and secondary structure, and avionics boxes. You will work across the entire product life cycle - proposal, design, prototyping, analysis, testing, and operations to decrease the cost of accessing the Moon. You will provide regular progress updates to the Structures, Analysis, and Mechanism manager on progress.

Job Responsibilities:

• Design ground support equipment as well as primary and secondary structure.
• Perform trade studies through prototyping, analysis, and testing.
• Design precision electro-mechanical systems.
• Create and review Solid Model Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and drawings.
• Perform hands-on assembly of prototypes and flight hardware.
• Perform structural analysis to optimize designs for strength, stiffness, and mass efficiency.
• Create and implement test plans, documenting results in a clear manner.
• Develop tools, methods, and best practices as they relate to mechanical structure.
• Coordinate between internal teams, external partners, and vendors.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace Engineering, or related fields.
• 5+ years of relevant experience designing mechanical systems.
• Proficient in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) (SolidWorks preferred) and lifecycle management tools.
• Thorough understanding of manufacturing methods and their design impact.
• Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles and application.
• Ability to analyze components to survive static, vibration, and shock environments.
• Adaptable to a startup environment, and capable of self-starting with minimal guidance.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing needs and requirements.

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

• Master of Science (M.S.) in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or related fields.
• 10+ years of relevant experience.
• Experience developing robotics systems for aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicles.
• Experience across a wide range of fabrication and assembly techniques.
• Knowledge of first order sizing calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) (ANSYS preferred).

Note: This position may be filled at multiple levels. This is initially a contract position with potential to convert to direct employment for candidates located in or willing to relocate to Pittsburgh, PA. Remote work is possible for exceptional candidates, but would remain as a contract position without relocation.

The base salary range represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for this position. The actual base salary offered for this position will depend on numerous factors including individual performance, business objectives, and the candidates professional experience.
