    Position Overview:
    The HVAC/Piping/Plumbing Estimator is responsible for accurately determining material, labor, equipment, and subcontracting costs for a wide range of mechanical construction projects. Working closely with project managers, engineers, suppliers, and subcontractors, the Estimator will analyze project documents, prepare detailed estimates, develop value-engineering options, and support the successful bidding and negotiation of new work. This position requires a blend of technical expertise, strong analytical skills, market awareness, and effective communication abilities.

    Key Responsibilities for Mechanical Piping/HVAC Estimator:

    • Estimating & Bid Preparation:

      • Review and interpret project plans, specifications, and contract documents to understand the full scope of HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems.
      • Perform detailed quantity take-offs and develop comprehensive cost estimates, including labor, materials, equipment rental, subcontracted services, and overhead.
      • Utilize estimating software and tools for accurate, efficient calculations.
      • Prepare and present clear, organized bid proposals and supporting documentation to senior management for review.
    • Scope Clarification & Value Engineering:

      • Collaborate with the preconstruction and engineering teams to identify potential cost-saving measures, alternate materials, or value-engineering solutions.
      • Develop options to address client needs, optimize system performance, and reduce project costs without compromising quality.
      • Work closely with vendors and suppliers to confirm pricing, availability, and lead times on materials and equipment.
    • Market Research & Relationship Building:

      • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current market pricing, labor rates, material costs, and emerging technologies in the mechanical construction industry.
      • Develop and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and manufacturers, ensuring a robust network of cost-competitive and high-quality partners.
      • Attend industry events and engage in continuous professional development to stay informed about changes in codes, standards, and best practices.
    • Risk Analysis & Project Support:

      • Identify and evaluate project risks, including technical challenges, schedule constraints, and market volatility.
      • Provide input and support to project managers and field teams during preconstruction, project kickoff, and execution phases.
      • Offer post-bid clarification and participate in negotiations with clients, owners, and general contractors as needed.
    • Documentation & Process Improvement:

      • Maintain organized records of estimates, take-offs, vendor quotes, and correspondence to support clear project handovers.
      • Continuously improve estimating methods and implement best practices to increase accuracy, efficiency, and consistency.
      • Contribute to the refinement of internal estimating databases, cost libraries, and productivity factors.

    Qualifications & Requirements of Mechanical Piping/HVAC Estimator:

    • Education & Experience:

      • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field; equivalent industry experience considered.
      • Minimum of 5 years of experience in estimating HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems for commercial or industrial projects.
    • Technical Skills:

      • Strong understanding of mechanical construction practices, codes, standards (e.g., ASHRAE, SMACNA, ASME, IPC), and industry best practices.
      • Proficiency with industry-standard estimating software, digital take-off tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
      • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, structural, and architectural drawings and specifications.
    • Soft Skills:

      • Excellent analytical, mathematical, and critical thinking abilities.
      • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex data and negotiate tactfully.
      • Strong organizational and time-management skills, capable of handling multiple estimates under tight deadlines.
      • Attention to detail, accuracy, and a commitment to delivering quality work.

    Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

    • Primarily office-based with regular use of computer systems and software.
    • Occasional visits to project sites, which may involve exposure to construction environments, uneven terrain, and variable weather conditions.
    • Ability to sit, stand, and move freely for extended periods.
