    Role Overview

    As a Medical Laboratory Scientist I, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to vital research while building your expertise in advanced sample processing, microbiology, equipment maintenance, and data management. You will be an integral part of our team, supporting important research outcomes. As you develop in the role, you'll also mentor and train Medical Laboratory Assistants, helping to shape the next generation of talent.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assess and process samples for testing, ensuring they meet established criteria.
    • Handle advanced processing of specimens such as blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid, following our established protocols.
    • Operate and monitor laboratory instruments, including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and urine analyzers.
    • Share significant clinical results with veterinary staff.
    • Conduct preventative maintenance and ensure quality control for all analyzers.
    • Accurately collect and record data in both paper and digital formats, adhering to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
    • Review study protocols and ensure data complies with GLP standards.
    • Perform point technician duties such as preparing study books and collecting data.
    • Generate and verify sample manifests and accountabilities.
    • Pack and ship samples with care and precision.
    • Support refrigerator and freezer mapping qualifications.
    • Submit quality control data for review and analysis.
    • Perform basic microbiological testing and setup.
    • Train and mentor Medical Laboratory Assistants, fostering growth and development.
    • Provide scientific guidance to Study Directors as needed.
    • Take on other tasks as needed to support our research.

    Qualifications

    • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required.
    • ASCP or AMT certification is required.
    • Ideally, you have at least 2 years of experience working in a medical laboratory setting.
    • You're an effective communicator, both in writing and verbally.
    • You have an advanced understanding of study design and lab procedures.
    • You're familiar with GLP and the federal regulations governing laboratory animal care.
    • You're able to work independently and manage your time effectively, even under deadlines.

    Special Requirements

    • This role involves working in a laboratory, which includes potential exposure to human and animal pathogens, chemicals, and animal tissues, including zoonotic organisms.
    • You'll need to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including N95 masks and respirators, when required.
    • You should be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
    • Flexibility is important; this role may require working beyond the typical schedule, including evenings, weekends, or extended shifts on short notice.
