This position will support the US Department of Veterans Affairs Critical Staffing Program. The person in this position will represent International SOS and provide services outlined below:
The Medical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for supporting all medical laboratory functions. This includes performing advanced testing on blood, tissue, urine, stool, amniotic fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, and other body specimens in a lab. They operate and maintain equipment to examine these samples, ensuring precise and timely results. The Medical Laboratory Supervisor will handle the advanced testing, quality control, troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and advanced laboratory functions.
B. Key Responsibilities (Critical responsibilities and skills of this position, listed in order of importance)
- Perform a full range of automated and non-automated laboratory procedures in the areas of chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, bacteriology, and immunohematology according to established protocols.
- Evaluates the suitability of the specimen for analysis, requesting new specimen if determined to be unusable. Prepares specimens for analysis; requesting new specimen if physiologic states of the specimen properties are maintained.
- Selects, perform, evaluates, and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols. Recognizes and reacts to indicator of malfunction; locates and implements corrections.
- Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports.
- Calibrate, standardizes, adjusts and maintains instruments on which trained. Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks and monitoring. Identifies the cause of common problems and makes simple repairs.
- Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures; correlates quantitative data with patient data (i.e., history medications) to verify results.
- Performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results. Recognizes abnormal results that require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly.
- Responsible for the generation of laboratory results from the work area into the laboratory computer system.
- Edit and verify results recorded into the computer system.
- Stock and maintain specialized supplies used in the work area.
- Accession and receive samples into VA laboratory information system package for house testing or send outs to reference laboratories.
- Perform phlebotomy to obtain patient specimens for laboratory testing including blood cultures and compatibility samples.
C. Job Profile
Basic Requirements/Certifications:
- Must possess certification/registration as determined by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT).
- Full and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
- Certified in Basic Life Support BLS (CPR). Certifications must be obtained or issued by the American Heart Association (AHA), an organization recognized by the AHA, or Military Training Network (MTN) and maintained during the contract.
- Proficiency in the use of the Veterans Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) is preferred.
- Must possess at least one year of experience within the last five years.
Education Required:
- Must have earned a bachelor's degree.
- Must have graduated from a medical technology program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS).
Physical Requirements:
- Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
- May require bending, stooping and lifting to 25 lbs.
Other Special Qualifications:
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must be able to relocate to project site for the duration of the contract.
- Proficient in written and spoken English.
- Computer literate as patient documentation is directly inputted in the patient’s medical record.
- Pass/possess VA Public Trust Clearance.
