POSITION TITLE: Meter Technician

STATUS: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, AFSCME (Emergency Essential)
REPORTS TO: Information Systems Manager
I. POSITION SUMMARY
This position has primary responsibility for reading, installing, and maintaining electric and water meters managed by the Town of Smyrna. This includes driving and walking on a regular basis and the ability to effectively use, maintain and troubleshoot hand-held electronic devices using an automatic collector. This position also requires direct interaction with the general public and acting as a professional representative of the Town of Smyrna.
II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The below listed essential duties and responsibilities are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for this position:
• Read electric and potentially water meters and input data on a contemporaneous basis using hand-held and other electronic equipment.
• Install, test, and replace electric and water meters.
• Perform routine maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing electric and water meters.
• Connect and disconnect utility services.
• Perform random and scheduled inspections of electric and water meters, including tests for theft and unauthorized connections and use of utility services.
• Ability to locate and mark utility services, including performance of “Miss Utility” located for electric, water and sewer.
• Be available “on call” as assigned and scheduled by Town of Smyrna management.
• Other required duties from time to time as assigned by Town Smyrna management including physical labor from in the field relating to meters and other utility-related work.
III. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Ability to work in a physical working environment, including walking, driving, standing, and lifting on a regular basis.
• Ability to work in conditions exposed to heat, cold, and other outdoor hazards.
• Ability to use tools and equipment associated with electric and water meters.
• Basic knowledge of electrical and water utilities, work practices and procedures, or the ability to become proficient upon hire.
• Ability to work safely, respecting the health and safety of all Town of Smyrna employees, visitors and residents.
• Ability to consistently project a professional and courteous image and to create a sense of confidence to the Town of Smyrna's residents and visitors.
• Ability to safely operate a Town of Smyrna vehicle.
• Ability to work independently with little oversight and maintain a high standard of productivity and professional ethics.
• Capacity to lift on a regular basis up to fifty (50) pounds with proper lifting techniques.
IV. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• High School diploma or GED Certificate.
• Experience in energy or utilities industry is preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including Excel preferred, or ability to become proficient upon hire.
• Valid Driver's license
