    Job Description

    Midwestern Pet Foods is looking for a driven Pet Food Formulator to join our growing team. This individual will hold an important role to continue producing quality pet food that our consumers love. Midwestern Pet Foods has provided quality pet food for almost 100 years and we are looking for an individual that has the passion to continue helping pets live happy, healthy lives.    

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Learn Midwestern Pet Foods’ story, brands and products to continue the long history of providing healthy, delicious food for pets. We are proud of who we are and where we are going.
    • Formulate tasty recipes for all of Midwestern Pet Foods’ brands while ensuring the right nutrients are incorporated into each pet food bag.
    • Ensure all company standards and product requirements are met in each recipe.
    • Assess current recipes and recommend improvements as needed.
    • Research the effectiveness of dietary regimens to ensure our products are above industry standards.
    • Maintain awareness of technical and scientific development in the pet food industry.
    • Ensure necessary documentation is maintained to meet and substantiate product label compliance standards, feeding guidelines, statements of nutritional adequacy, and advertising and promotional claims.
    • Compile and analyze internal and external lab results of all raw ingredients and finished pet foods and/or treats/biscuits; provide guidance on specification updates and/or reformulation needs based on data analysis.
    • Assist with our Consumer Affairs department on questions regarding the nutrients and recipes of our pet food brands.
    • Ability to prepare and present results, both written and oral, to all levels of team members.
    • Travel may occur up to 10%.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Master’s degree in Animal Nutrition or Animal Science (or a related field).
    • Extensive knowledge of the scientific basis of animal (specifically dog and cat) nutrition.
    • Experience in pet food formula design (dry food, wet food, treats, and canned food).
    • Familiarity with formulation software (Concept 5 preferable) for diet formulation and review.
    • Working knowledge of dry manufacturing processes and operations.
    • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple demands.
    • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to adapt quickly as the pet food industry continues to evolve.
    • Self-management and self-motivation.
