    The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) is the public transportation provider for the Memphis area. As one of the largest public transit operators in the state of Tennessee, MATA transports customers in the City of Memphis and parts of Shelby County on fixed-route buses, paratransit vehicles and vintage rail trolleys.

    MATA is looking for MATAplus Bus Operators to transport riders with disabilities as well as the elderly in a safe, courteous, and reliable manner on the designated computer-generated route with a defined time schedule. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, and must have a CDL Class A or B with a “P” endorsement, or a Class D driver's license with an “F” endorsement. 

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Drive non-air brake or air-brake equipped vehicles to transport riders with disabilities as

    well as the elderly in a safe, courteous, and reliable manner on a designated computer-

    generated route with a defined time schedule.

    • Provide assistance and support in a safe and orderly manner for passenger boarding and

    deboarding. Must also be proficient with emergency procedures including evacuation of

    passengers.

    • Must be able to operate platform wheelchair lifts and ramps and be able to secure all

    common wheelchairs, scooters and other mobility devices as well as assist with securing

    seat belts and personal items.

    • Operate and communicate via a two-way radio system following FCC regulations.

    • Must communicate regularly with MATAplus Dispatch regarding route deviations,

    manifest overload, accidents, or passenger incidents.

    • Notify MATAplus Dispatch of passengers' medical or behavioral problems and vehicle

    mechanical or electrical trouble.

    • Complete and submit written reports concerning passenger incidents.

    • Operate on-board computer for fare box and responsible for the collection of appropriate

    fares as well as distributing and collecting passes.

    • Advise passengers of rules and regulations when necessary.

    • Must have a proven record of providing exceptional customer service as well as

    responsiveness to customer questions and concerns.

    • Must be able to follow communication, route schedule, appearance, etiquette protocol

    and procedures based on respect for self and others.

    • Must successfully complete all required training including ADA, diversity and sensitivity

    training, driving skill refreshers and vehicle operation.

    • Secure and turn in articles left behind in vehicle.

    • Assume additional responsibilities as required.

    • Must maintain a valid Class D license with an “F” endorsement during the entire course

    of employment.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • MUST POSSESS A VALID CDL CLASS A OR B WITH A "P" ENDORSEMENT OR CLASS D DRIVER'S LICENSE WITH AN “F” ENDORSEMENT AND HAVE NO LICENSE SUSPENSIONS OR REVOCATIONS DURING THE LAST FIVE YEARS. 
    • Must be able to read, write, and speak English. 
    • Knowledge of OrbCad system is not required, but is preferred.

    ENVIRONMENT: As driving a vehicle is the primary duty in this position, extensive periods of sitting is required. Requires ability to withstand exposure to weather conditions, dust, engine fumes, toxic chemicals and extreme noise levels. Requires ability to perform hand-over-hand method of steering vehicles and be able to grip a steering wheel; flexibility of arms is required to safely maneuver all types of coaches and vans. May be required to lift or push 50 lbs.; overhead reaching.
