    POSITION SUMMARY: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Interpreter, LAS Program. In this role, the successful candidate Responsible for providing spoken language Medical Interpretation and Translation of complex medical information to NYULs limited English proficient (LEP) patients and families. They ensure the complete understanding of medical information between doctors, nurses, medical staff, and patients, and they serve as a department ambassador to educate staff on best practices, available language resources at NYU, and how to appropriately request the adequate interpretation modality and translation services.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • FACILITATES COMMUNICATION AMONG PATIENTS, FAMILIES, AND STAFF THROUGH:
      • Provides spoken language interpretation services and facilitates communication among patients, families, and providers/staff.
      • Provides accurate translations of medical and non-medical documents including but not limited to medical reports, patient/family educational material, departmental brochures etc.
      • Adheres to the Code of Ethics as put forth by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC).
      • Provides cultural brokering to patients/families and staff as needed, while maintaining professional role and sensitivity during critical medical and/or psychological situations
      • Demonstrates excellent communication (both written and verbal) and customer service skills with all levels of Medical Center staff and patients (both in person and via telephone/email).
      • Respects and maintains confidentiality of all patient, physician, staff and hospital related information.
    • PROMOTES APPROPRIATE UTILIZATION OF INTERPRETATION SERVICES BY STAFF
      • Educates staff on the process of how to appropriately request, access, contact and schedule interpreting services.
      • Educates staff on the appropriate modality and availability of interpretation and translation services (including provision of sight translations).
      • Follows-up and intervenes directly with areas/units when scheduling conflicts and/or issues arise for them or any of the fellow interpreters.
      • Reports concerns and/or conflicts to LCDS Manager and speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance
      • Assists with scheduling, dispatching and managing spoken language interpreting services, while communicating with staff, freelance and agency interpreters as needed.
    • TEAMWORK/COMMUNICATION
      • Partners with all team members to achieve goals and demonstrates accountability for work.
      • Utilizes Hospital and Community resources and identifies appropriate trainings for professional development for LCDS interpreters’ team, and keeps current on changes in the medical interpreter profession.
      • Partner in the mission and uphold the core principles of the organization

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify you must have a Bachelors degree in a Healthcare field, Foreign Language, liberal arts or equivalent field. Must have completed 40-hour minimum Spanish medical interpreting training on Community of Medical Interpretation Skills OR hold Certification in Medical Interpretation CMI by National Board of Certification. Minimum of 3 years of medical interpreting experience, or equivalent work in a healthcare facility.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Certification in Medical Interpretation CMI by National Board of Certification or Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters is prefered.
