ABOUT THE POSITION:
Reporting directly to and working closely with the President and CEO, the Director of Development will lead UMDF’s Development Team engaging with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, funders, and community leaders in support of the mission. The Director will be responsible for the creation of the organization’s fundraising strategy and growing the current budget over the next strategic plan to allow UMDF to expand their programs, research, and support.
The Director of Development will collaborate with the CEO, leadership team members, and the Associate Director of Development to secure funding for existing and new initiatives; develop, cultivate, and steward a portfolio of high-net-worth donors; manage the organization’s fundraising plans, including major gifts, annual giving, corporate/foundation relations, sponsorships, grants, planned giving, venture philanthropy, and special events. This person will lead a development team of three staff, providing them with ongoing coaching, support, and professional development.
This is a unique opportunity for a sophisticated fundraising leader to apply proven revenue-generating strategies, strengthen current funding streams, and develop new growth opportunities. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional revenue generator who excels at relationship building, donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, and being an inspiring external and internal leader. Competitive candidates will have a track record of influencing stakeholders to achieve organizational objectives and securing major gifts. This person will not only have a deep understanding of best development practices, but also an ability to build best-in-class systems to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. The National Director of Development is a key position in UMDF leading the effort to raise critical funds for research, education, and support of people affected by mitochondrial diseases.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Organizational Leadership and Management
· Develop the organization's fundraising vision and strategy with a focus on growing the budget and diversifying funding streams
· Serve as an active member of the UMDF team providing leadership and support to strengthen storytelling skills and ability to participate in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors
· Manage a growing team of development professionals, holding team members accountable for achieving ambitious goals, ensuring opportunities for growth and professional development
· Set clear benchmarks for the team, regularly reflect on progress through data tracking and analytics, and adjust tactics as necessary to meet revenue goals
· Build comprehensive fundraising campaigns focused on recurring revenue and new donor acquisition
· In partnership with the Board of Trustees and CEO, set and deliver on ambitious budget goals for the year
· Foster strong cross department communication and collaboration
· Provide vision, leadership, and support to staff and volunteers to maximize revenue growth
Fundraising Strategy and Execution
· Develop and manage the execution of the overall strategy for the department to ensure long-term, recurring, diversified fund development with plans to increase revenue over the next three years
· Identify, develop, and cultivate new potential funders including corporate, government, individuals, and foundations
· Actively grow and expand pipelines across each of UMDF’s giving areas
· Proactively design and execute new and creative strategies and revenue streams, based on the organization’s unique programs, in line with the strategic plan’s goals to diversify and sustainably grow the organization’s fundraising capacity
· Manage relationships with board members and donors, ensuring a culture of philanthropy
· Partner with the Marketing/Communications team to ensure the highest quality in fundraising communications and promotional materials, including proposals, applications, correspondence, reports, budgets, and program information
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

· Experienced. You bring a minimum of eight years of experience in mission-driven nonprofit development leadership, including leading a multi-disciplinary team and guiding colleagues on best-in-class development expectations.
· Dedicated. You possess an authentic and clear passion for UMDF’s mission as well as an approach to fundraising and philanthropy that is aligned with the organization's core values.
· Innovative. You have the instinctive need to achieve objectives despite the hurdles that may come along the way. You are ready to join a fast-paced and growing environment, be a constructive problem-solver, and adapt to change. You have a record of securing 5 and 6-figure gifts from individual donors, with experience across other funding streams, such as corporations, foundations, and events.
· Curious. You consider yourself a lifelong learner who will be eager to come up to speed with UMDF’s work, including the broader mitochondrial disease community ecosphere.
· Team Player. You have excellent interpersonal skills, empathy, and high emotional intelligence with a track record of building strong relationships cross-functionally, internally and externally
· Organizational Leader: You understand the importance of being an internal leader and thought partner; you thrive in making strong connections with the staff at all levels, donors, and other senior stakeholders.
· Clear communicator. You possess impeccable written and oral communication skills, with experience communicating effectively in one-on-one and large group settings, with sharp attention to detail.
· Highly organized. You demonstrate meticulous organizational and project management skills; ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
· Data-driven. You are excited about getting results and are informed by data. You know how to identify problems and create informed and comprehensive strategies to make progress and get results. Database experience required, Salesforce or other CRM experience preferred, high proficiency in Microsoft Office.
