    Job Summary

    Under general supervision of the Director of Community Engagement, the Community Engagement Specialist (CES) is responsible for the implementation of science education programming for the NMMF’s Community Engagement Program. The CES serves as the primary contact for offsite school and community group programs, and is responsible for contributing to and presenting both in person and online learning materials for offsite school and community group programs. This position is part time, up to 8 hours per week.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Present (in-person or virtually) learning materials related to current community engagement initiatives

    Travel to schools and other partner facilities to lead education workshops and events

    Maintain communications with schools, community groups, and partners.

    Attend weekly team meetings virtually or in-person

    Maintain full knowledge of day-to-day coordination of program logistics, objectives and lesson plans for each workshop

    Maintain and organize educational program materials and supplies at our San Diego site

    Train and coordinate volunteers

    Recommend curriculum revisions and apply approved changes

    Assist with strategic development of the Community Engagement Program

    Skills and Competencies

    Developing program descriptions and lesson plans, including the creation, procurement, and organization of materials appropriate to assessment of audience/community needs

    Investigating current research and literature

    Working with NMMF scientists and incorporating their expertise into community engagement programming

    Implementing programs using appropriate materials, teaching strategies and curriculum, recommending revisions as needed

    Demonstrated ability to provide feedback and use mentoring techniques

    Strong verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills

    Presentation skills to diverse audiences in a variety of environments and settings

    Social media skills, including the ability to independently compose well-written social media posts, stories, live videos, and post on NMMF social media platforms

    Proven ability to work independently and use appropriate resources to accomplish assigned tasks and duties

    Proficient with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel and Google Suite

    Working knowledge of emerging educational technologies preferred

    Experience with and working knowledge of the use of Next Generation Science Standards to develop student-centered pre-K to 12 science curriculum for informal science education preferred

    Experience in developing and implementing teacher professional development workshops using best practices in teaching pedagogy preferred

    Experience with and working knowledge of interpreting and communicating complex scientific research for pre-K to 12 and public audiences using research-based pedagogical strategies preferred

    Qualifications

    BA or BS in Marine Science, Environmental Science, or related Natural Sciences or education with science specialization; OR combination of related educational background and teaching in the subject matter; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience

    Two (2+) or more years experience teaching in an informal science education institution, with a strong emphasis in science interpretation and integration. Proven ability to maintain classroom attention.

    Must be able to lift boxes of supplies up to 20 lbs.

    Must be able to work a flexible schedule, weekends and evenings included, dependent upon community engagement workshop schedule.

    Must pass a LiveScan screening
