Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director, the Development Director will spearhead development efforts of the Samaritan Center. The Development Director is responsible for developing and executing the organization’s resource development and communication efforts in support of the organization’s mission and goals. This position is a leadership position within the organization.
Responsibilities:
o Work with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to develop and implement a comprehensive development and fundraising strategy.
o Engage and solicit existing and prospective donors by mail, by phone, through events and in face-to-face meetings, including the engagement of meal volunteers in the larger workings of the organization.
o Cultivate and maintain strong community relationships with existing donors and prospects.
o Plan and manage special events not limited to: fundraising events, receptions and focus groups.
o Institute and manage an annual direct-mail campaign.
o Research grant and funding opportunities.
o Prepare grant proposals, reports, and updates.
o Analyze effectiveness of development efforts and make improvements accordingly.
o Direct the public relations/communications function to promote the organization’s mission for donor cultivation, including but not limited to media cultivation and design and dissemination of brochures, event materials, bi-monthly newsletter and public presentations.
o Develop and implement organization communication and marketing strategy.
o Support the continued population and expanded use of donor database functionality to support the needs of the organization.
o Support the general operating of the program. As a small team, we all chip in when needed, meaning everything from administrative tasks to picking up donations.
o Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills:
o 5 years’ prior experience in development or fund-raising roles, preferably in a not for profit environment
o Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
o Proven ability to plan, organize and analyze.
o Strong problem solving skills and ability to think creatively and conceptually.
o Ability to handle multiple tasks, with attention to details and deadlines.
o Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite products (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.)
o Comfortable working with databases and learning new software.
o Ability to work independently, under supervision and in a team-based environment.
o Adaptable and flexible to shifting opportunities, priorities and needs.
o Ability to communicate and work well with a range of constituents: volunteers, donors, executives, etc.
o Highly motivated and committed to Samaritan’s mission.
o Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
o Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends.
o Ability to travel to various event and meeting locations as needed for the job.
o Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
