    Job Description

    ELEMENTARY EDUCATION- DUAL LANGUAGE TEACHERS * SPANISH REQUIRED*

    The North Chicago D187 /National Louis University (NLU) Alternative Teacher Certification Pathway Bilingual Residency Program-

    • Residents will gain hands-on experience in a district school, with a mentor teacher, and pursue a graduate degree in elementary education. Upon successful completion of the program, and a commitment to work in D187 for at least four years, Residents will be hired for a full-time teaching job in the district.

    • Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in any area and a GPA of 3.0 in the final 60 hours of your bachelor’s degree.

    • BILINGUAL - SPANISH REQUIRED

    • Receive your professional educator license (PEL) in elementary education, master’s degree and a teaching position in D187 in 12 months

    • Complete the residency in the district you will teach in after receiving your PEL

    • Pair master’s-level coursework at NLU with a full-year, mentored classroom apprenticeship

    •Benefits D187 will provide Residents with health insurance.

    •RESIDENTS WILL RECEIVE AN ANNUAL STIPEND OF $17,000, PAID SEMI-MONTHLY (THE 15TH AND 30TH OF EACH MONTH) BY D187 FOR YEAR 1 FROM JULY 2021 THROUGH JUNE 2022. AFTER JUNE 2022 YOU ARE PAID AS A CONTRACTED TEACHER!

    Discounted Tuition at NLU Tuition and fees at NLU for just one year, the 2021-22 school year (including 35 semester hours of ELE Coursework and fees), is normally $25,240. The Teacher Residency program offers deep discounts and more preparation: Year 1: Residency Year – Master’s degree and Elementary Education PEL for $16,644 Year 2: Endorsement Year – Residents will be licensed teachers of record— and receive a salary—and will have fees of $6,375 These discounts reflect a 15% discount from NLU and a tuition offset of $5,000 from D187. Grants Residents may also be eligible for two grants/scholarships: • TEACH grant: $4,000 – The federal TEACH grant is available to both undergraduate and graduate students who commit to teaching at least four years in a high-need field in a school that serves students from low-income families. If you have received a TEACH grant before, you may be ineligible. • Minority Teachers of Illinois (MTI) scholarship: $5,000 – Residents who meet the requirements and commit to teach in high-need schools for five years may be eligible for the MTI scholarship. Summer School Opportunities Residents can also apply for a 2021 summer school position at a rate of up to $36.88 per hour to supplement income.

    Year one (Summer 2021-May 2022): • Residents will complete 12-months of accelerated courses toward their PEL in elementary education, plus one course in the bilingual/ESL track while gaining hands-on experience in a mentored classroom.

    During the summer, residents will be in NLU graduate-level courses full-time beginning in July and into August. Once the school year begins, Residents will spend:

    • Four days a week in a D187 classroom with a mentor teacher

    • One day a week taking graduate-level courses toward their M.A.T. and initial PEL in elementary education.
