    SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:

    Medical assistants are essential members of the Patient-Centered Medical Home team. Medical assistants are instrumental in helping patients feel at ease in the physician’s office and often explain the physician's instructions.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    Follows established office procedures in helping providers and clinical staff examine and treat patients.

    Escort patients to exam rooms, interviews patients, measure vital signs, including weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and document all information in patient’s chart

    Prepare patients for examination

    Assisting the physician during exams

    Gives injections, applies bandages and performs other tests or procedures as directed by the physician or nurse practitioner

    Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens

    Explaining treatment procedures to patients

    Change and maintain confidential medical files and records using the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system as necessary.

    Stocks supplies, samples and other items in accordance with office procedures and established inventory levels.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Must have at least two years of medical assisting experience, preferably in a clinical setting. Graduate of a medical assisting program is strongly preferred. Such medical assisting program are offered in vocational-technical high schools, post-secondary vocational schools, and community and junior colleges. Post-secondary programs usual last either 1 year and result in a certificate or diploma, or 2 years and result in an associate degree. Accredited program often include an internship that provides practical experience in physicians’ offices or other healthcare facilities. Training typically covers anatomy, physiology and medical terminology as well as keyboarding, transcription, record keeping, accounting and insurance processing.

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    The specific work environment for this position is a multiple doctors’ facility working in an office setting. This position involves considerable sitting at a desk having sole responsibility for his or her working environment and it involves working independently within a larger office. Typically, all required responsibilities are completed at the desk or work station although walking to other areas within the office can be necessary. The environment may be stressful at times due to deadlines, job requirements and other factors.

    The position requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions and finger use. Pushing and pulling are occasionally required. Use of a computer, keyboard and telephone along with various office machines is an essential part of the job.
