    About the organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

    About the program: Compass Children's Center (CCC) is an early childhood education center with a curriculum tailored to meet the specific needs of children experiencing poverty and homelessness. The Center serves 70 children, ages 0-5, and their families each day, and addresses the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of the children, as well as the functioning and well-being of the families.

    Compensation: $25-40 per hour

    Location: 144 Leavenworth St, San Francisco (Tenderloin neighborhood) ****

    Schedule: Vary, as needed

    Responsibilities: The On-Call Substitute Teacher provides support on a varying basis to the team at Compass Children's Center. Specific responsibilities may include:

    • If qualified with Associate Teacher or higher credential: teach an infant/toddler or preschool class, maintaining supervision ratio at all times, when the teacher is on leave.
    • If qualified with Assistant Teacher credential: cover, as part of the team, classes when teacher is absent or in a meeting.
    • Become familiar with and follow classroom routine and schedule.
    • Follow daily lesson plan as written by the teacher.
    • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with other staff.
    • Interact with children in a positive and respectful manner.
    • Engage in the continued implementation of the Pyramid Model of Teaching through building nurturing and responsive relationships with children, families and fellow staff and through the upkeep of a high quality, supportive environment.
    • Coordinate/assist with outside play, indoor activities, and afternoon transition periods.
    • Prepare lunches for Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers.
    • Assist with feedings, nap preparation (i.e. putting out cots, changing diapers, rubbing backs), and assist children with bathroom and change diapers when needed.
    • Assist with cleanup as needed: clean the changing area and changing table; remove and wash dishes, tables, chairs; sweep floors; etc.

    Qualifications:

    • Required: possess at least 6 units of completed Early Childhood Education classes (12 units preferred).
    • ****Good interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Physical clearance (including TB clearance) and fingerprint clearance.
    • Flexible and open to feedback.
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work.

    ****Compensation and Benefits:

    • Compensation: $25 - $40 per hour
    • Non-benefit eligible role except as required by law
