Job Title: Part-Time Literacy/ Low Beginning ESOL Teacher for Online Adult English to Work Program
Location: Online (Northeast, U.S.A. residents preferred)
Background: The New American Association of Massachusetts (NAAM) is a non-profit organization that provides social support services to refugees and immigrants in Massachusetts. Core services include: ESOL classes, employment, case management, citizenship, youth programming, and more. We are currently hiring ESOL instructors to support the language development support the administering of NAAM’s employment services.
Purpose: ESL Literacy and Basic Beginning Instructors needed for the online adult ESOL program to teach conversation/pronunciation, reading, listening and writing. Must be available to teach four mornings a week (Monday – Thursday, 10am – 12pm).[MM1] [MM2] Demonstrated ability to teach diverse populations and skill levels in one classroom is required. Creativity, compassion and high energy is a must. The instructor(s) will place specific emphasis on employment, U.S. culture and social [MM3] norms, and parent-school communication. Active conversation practice will be encouraged.
The instructor(s) will collaborate with the students’ Case Managers and ESOL Program Managers to identify student needs and to create relevant curriculum.
Teachers may create their own employment, wellness, and acculturation content, or utilize a vast database of collaborative resources in the NAAM collection.
Responsibilities:
· Teaching online ESOL class in reading, writing, conversation/pronunciation, grammar to adult learners (approximately 12-15 students). (Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs 10-12)[MM6]
· Assessing student language skills.
· Creating and implementing ESOL lesson plans.
· Communicating with students about attendance issues
· Communicating with case managers about student issues that present in class
· Attending bi-monthly staff meetings (and office hours when needed for troubleshooting).
Required qualifications:
· Excellent command of the English language.
· Proficiency and experience in Google Meet (our program’s videoconferencing platform), Google Classroom, Google Slides, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Outlook, and Microsoft Office.
· Experience in newcomer ESOL teaching and demonstrated ability to teach diverse populations and skill levels in one classroom, 1-3 years minimum.
· Bachelor's Degree and TESOL/TESL/TEFL certificate.
Preferred qualifications:
· Speak at least one additional language (preferably Spanish, Swahili, Pashto/Farci, Arabic, or Haitian Creole).
· Individuals with experience and/or personal ties to immigrant and refugee communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
· Familiarity with common ESOL leveling systems, such as NRS, Mass ELPs, and CEFR.
Compensation & Schedule:$25 - $27 per hour
8 teaching hours: Monday – Thursday 10am-12pm
8.5 prep hours
Total – 16.5 hours per week
