    POSITION SUMMARY : Detroit Action is looking for an organizer to join our Online to Offline Organizing Department. The organizer is responsible for organizing a digital community to help amplify messaging, distribute political education, and recruit people to events. They will also be responsible for assisting the Politics & Organizing department with campaigns and organizing actions. They will be responsible for developing the leadership of their community and engaging dormant Detroit Action leaders to create systemic change in communities both online and offline.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The person will be responsible for online organizing, engagement and recruitment of new and existing members by:

    • Generate leads by using digital canvassing tactics like direct messages, group chats, and phone banking.
    • Creating a small digital community through Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram who share social media graphics, videos, and messaging.
    • Recruit and attend actions, training and organizing opportunities in order to activate members and activists.
    • Mobilize and track engagement of members and activists at various events and field opportunities in the database EveryAction or utilizing our organizing applications.
    • Develop the political consciousness of the affiliate organizations’ leaders through popular education, reflection, leadership development and developing appropriate educational materials.
    • Hold 5 or more one to one conversations per week with volunteers and newly activated relationships
    • Create social media calendars, content, and campaigns

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Experience and ability to work/organize across racial and cultural lines.
    • Experience doing community, labor, or political organizing.
    • Experience working in a grassroots membership organization or other type of social justice organization.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with diverse peers, stakeholders, and communities Collaborative work ethic and ability to work effectively across lines of difference
    • Ability to work autonomously as part of an innovative team
    • Strong public speaking skills, including in small and large groups.
    • Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to taking action to improve your community or to address specific problems is critical. The person must have the ability to think strategically, make decisions, be an effective communicator, and be organized.
    • Proactive, self-motivated individual
    • Keen analytical skills and technologically savvy.
    • Strong Leadership skills

    ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

    O2O organizer will be supervised by the Political Director while heavily consulted by the Communications and Organizing department.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • The position is a full-time position that works up to 40 hours per week.
    • This position is based in an office building in Detroit, MI.
    • The position occasionally requires weekend work (Saturday and Sunday).
    • The position requires occasional national travel up to 20% of the time.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Must have the physical ability to carry items up to 10 pounds on occasion.
    • Must have the physical ability to navigate 3 flights of stairs daily in case of elevator breakdown.
    • Must be able to move around the office to communicate with staff daily.
    • Must be able to travel domestically on an airplane up to 6 times per year.
    • Must be able to be outside in the elements 5 hours continuously per day year round.

    PREFERRED CANDIDATE:

    • Candidates must have reliable transportation to and from the officePassion for and experience in social justice and/or political causes
    • Alignment with Detroit Action’s Mission
    • Experience working in communities of color is highly preferred

    SALARY:

    $58,000
