Open Water Rescue Lifeguards - Candidate Recruitment
This application is to apply to the candidate pool for candidate recruitment for a potential service contract in 2025. Please read carefully to understand the job description and physical requirements for candidate hiring selection. USLA Lifeguard, CPR and State of Michigan Medical First Response training will be provided during the paid training academy. If a contract is awarded, interviews will start in February 2025 or sooner. Physical agility testing and the academy will start in April/May of 2025. There are several seasonal Supervisor, Full Time and Part Time positions that will be filled if awarded the contract.
A GLR lifeguard is responsible for actively monitoring open water areas like beaches, ensuring the safety of swimmers by preventing accidents, performing rescues when necessary, enforcing water safety rules, and providing first aid to those in distress, all while adhering to the high standards of rescue techniques and procedures outlined by the USLA; essentially acting as the primary safety responder in an open water environment, with a focus on proactive vigilance and swift intervention in emergency situations.
Key responsibilities of a GLR lifeguard:
Continuously scan the designated swimming area to identify potential hazards and distressed swimmers.
Educate swimmers about water safety rules and actively intervene to correct risky behaviors.
Execute appropriate rescue techniques, including reaching, wading, throwing assists, and active swimming rescues, depending on the situation.
Provide immediate first aid and CPR to injured or distressed swimmers as needed.
Check and maintain rescue equipment like lifeguard boards, rescue tubes, and flotation devices.
Document all incidents and near misses, following established reporting procedures.
Maintain clear communication with fellow lifeguards, supervisors, and emergency services.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
This position requires a mandatory physical agility test prior to final selection for all candidates. Physical agility testing dates will be in April of 2025. If hired, all candidates will be required to attend the 120 hour training academy held in April/May 2025.
