Job Description

Oxfam America is a global relief and development organization working to right the wrongs of poverty, hunger, and injustice. As one of 17 members of the Oxfam International confederation, Oxfam America works with people in more than 90 countries to create long-term solutions to poverty, and campaigns for social change.

Oxfam America’s US Domestic Program manages four programs: Good Jobs in the Gulf Coast, focused on workforce training and advocacy supporting working families in Louisiana and Mississippi; Decent Work, focused on the challenges facing low-wage workers in the US, with a particular emphasis on marginalized women workers; Foodworker Justice, focused primarily on the working conditions of poultry processing workers; and Puerto Rico Recovery, focusing on a just and equitable rebuilding after Hurricane Maria. The intern position will primarily support the Decent Work program.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support research projects for the Decent Work Program
  • Projects currently in the research pipeline include: research on housekeeping workforce in the accommodations industry; research on link between worker conditions and food safety in the poultry industry; research on labor policies at the  state level; state of the recovery in Puerto Rico (after Hurricane Maria)
  • Types of research support may include: Checking data accuracy, finding sources, verifying and fixing citations; writing and editing

   

•  Support USDP knowledge management
  • Create a functional “story bank” of worker stories and interviews gathered by USDP staff and partners
  • Assess current systems for knowledge management, make recommendations for improved platforms and systems.
• Participate in Decent Work Program and USDP team meetings as appropriate 
• Participate in external calls, meetings, or trainings as needed and report back to program teams
• Other support functions as needed

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND CORE COMPETENCIES

• Minimum 2 years’ work or academic research experience on development or social justice issues.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated competence with Microsoft Office, Outlook, web-based applications and relational databases.
• Strong administrative and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to set
• priorities among multiple tasks, manage multiple requests and make decisions about how to handle them, take initiative, and use sound judgment.
• Ability to analyze and solve problems and research work-related issues.
• Ability to take responsibility for assigned tasks and to achieve intended results.
• Ability to work as a member of a team that has multiple sites of operation and work effectively in multicultural settings, commitment to constructive engagement towards improving overall team performance.
• Understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and work of Oxfam America.
