At the Sobering Center, we are dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of individuals struggling with risky substance use. We firmly believe in our mission of diverting publicly intoxicated clients from jail and hospital and providing them with the necessary support and resources to overcome their substance abuse issues. We are seeking a passionate and empathetic Peer Coach to join our team and contribute to our life-changing work. This is a new 2 year grant funded position that seeks to engage clients in the hospital after a recent overdose.
Position Overview:
As a Peer Coach in our team, you will play a vital role in assisting clients in their journey towards harm reduction and recovery. You will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team to provide compassionate care, support, and intervention strategies to individuals who have been engaged in public intoxication. Your primary objective will be to meet with clients referred from a hospital who have recently experienced an opiate overdose or who present with Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Services delivered will utilize person-centered care with a strengths-based, trauma responsive, and harm-reduction perspective. Responsibilities: • Engage with clients in a hospital setting who have recently experienced an overdose or present with SUD. • At initial engagement provide the client with emotional support and education on safe use and harm reduction, delivering harm reduction supplies, and giving information/referral for community resources and SUD services. • Provide community-based follow-up for clients who are interested and willing to assist in navigation and connection to resources in the community, and treatment services which include any SUD treatment modality. • Provide continuity of care from the ED to the Sobering Center for clients who wish safe sobering or require a safe place to stay until their clinical needs are addressed. • Facilitate peer led individual or group sessions. • Offer peer return appointments in the community and where appropriate initiate wellness planning utilizing Wellness Recovery Action Plan ‘s (“WRAP”) for each client choosing to create a recovery plan. • Enter grant information accurately into relevant databases in a timely manner.
Qualifications/Competencies:
• Lived experience as someone who has lived with drug, alcohol, incarceration, or some form of mental health condition and is in recovery. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to establish rapport, engage clients, and build therapeutic alliances. • Awareness of local community resources including MAT and harm reduction services. • Well-organized and apt in problem-solving. • Willingness to uphold The Sobering Center’s philosophy, mission, & vision. • Must demonstrate a high level of intercultural competence, an understanding of the diverse identities and cultures of people experiencing homelessness, and in developing and supporting inclusive communities. • Flexibility to adapt to a dynamic work environment and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team. • Familiarity with relevant regulations, confidentiality guidelines, and ethical standards within the field. • Empathy, patience, and the ability to respond effectively to individuals in crisis. • Assist clients admitted to any Sobering Center program when not engaged in grant activities. • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalency. • Valid Class C Texas Drivers License • Peer Coach certification or willingness to complete within 6 months of hire. • CPR certified or CPR certificate completion within 3 months of being hired. • Bilingual preferred.
Physical Demands:
• Ability to assist clients transferring from standing to lying and from lying to sitting and standing positions. • Ability to assist clients transfer to restroom and to assist in showering if required. • Ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles over time without fatigue.
