    FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

    Reports to: Co-Directors of Immigration and Asylum Seeker Programs

    Schedule: 17 hours per week, generally Monday – Friday, including 2 evening shifts when evening programing is in session and some Saturdays

    Position Purpose: Provides direct services to immigrant asylum seeker community along with translation and interpretation

    ** Essential Functions** :

    • Provide linguist and culturally sensitive welcome and hospitality to all participants.
    • Conduct needs assessment to identify major stressors of the recently arrived immigrants to inform program development.
    • Complete individualized needs assessments among asylum seekers, and develop case plans with particular attention to culture, language, and special circumstances.
    • Maintain a high standard of record-keeping according to department’s policies and procedures.
    • Provide information about Mercy Center’s programing including but not limited to immigration, educational programming (ESOL, ABE & HSE), social services, and workforce development; make referrals to the different departments, making it easier for them to enroll to such programing.
    • Establish and maintain close relationships with and conduct outreach in previously identified asylum seeker communities. Additionally, develop linkages with asylum related key stakeholders around the city.
    • Participate in regular trainings and team meetings with supervisors and other Mercy Center staff.
    • Provides general administrative support to department staff.
    • Additional job-related duties may be assigned as required by the supervisor(s).

    Qualifications :

    • Experience (including lived experience) with low-income, limited English, vulnerable immigrant populations strongly preferred.
    • Previous experience in social services and/or immigration law strongly preferred.
    • Knowledge of NYC social service organizations and resources for basic needs of low-income New Yorkers desired; familiarity with African grassroots organizations helpful.
    • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to prioritize and multi-task several urgent projects in a fast-paced environment.
    • Computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google applications.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
    • Proficiency in English & fluency in French required; proficiency in other West African language desirable

    ** Physical Requirements and Work Environment** :

    • Generally, works in standard office conditions and climate.
    • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
