Job Overview:
The Phlebotomist will perform blood collection requiring knowledge of clinical science to understand various tests and specimen requirements. This role involves executing venipuncture, preparing patients for blood drawing, and collecting specimens for laboratory testing, including blood cultures and compatibility samples. Responsibilities include accessioning and receiving samples into the laboratory information system for in-house testing or sending them to reference laboratories.
The Phlebotomist will instruct patients on the proper collection of 24-hour urine and other samples collected at home, prepare collection materials, and measure and record 24-hour urine volumes. They will transport specimens to the laboratory, including those requiring special handling, and look up laboratory order numbers and patient information for outpatient drawings.
This role requires utilizing a numbering system to check patients into the laboratory, answering phones, and directing calls to other sections. Establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal skills and good customer relations with patients and families is essential. General clerical and administrative support for the area, as well as stocking and maintaining specialized supplies used in the drawing area, will also be part of the responsibilities.
