    The Policy Attorney supports Montana State Fund business and internal operations through legal and business advice and innovative, customer-centric solutions. They provide direction, guidance, interpret legal resources, and provide advice and recommendations to business partners and leadership. The Policy Attorney also serves as corporate counsel for the organization, requiring interpretation and legal research in a variety of subject areas.

    Required Skills

    What you will do:

    • Advising business on legal interpretation and compliance : Provide legal and business advice to internal staff regarding insurance matters including regulation, contract interpretation, coverage issues and insurance policy administration. Provides legal direction, interprets statutes, court decisions, rules and policies concerning or affecting the organization and provides written and oral legal advice and recommendations. Provides recommendations and advice in development of insurance rates, form updates, and process improvement. Supports compliance and regulatory compliance work. Represents MSF in various legal forums as required.
    • Performs corporate counsel functions : Manages non-workers compensation litigation, manages outside counsel and litigation activities, supports procurement/contracts, employment law, policyholder bankruptcies, and other miscellaneous corporate counsel duties. Maintains knowledge of state and federal employment laws impacting the organization.
    • Leads and supports special projects and training : Develops and provides training to internal staff on insurance and other subject areas, leads special projects and project teams, supports, and consults on projects across the organization.

    Required Experience

    What you will need (minimum qualifications):

    • Juris Doctor Degree (JD)
    • Minimum of Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Montana
    • Three (3) years of progressively responsible work experience in the practice of law, including:
      • Experience in employment law or insurance law (including workers’ compensation if applicable)

    Location and travel:
    This position may be hired to either work at our local headquarters in Helena, Montana or remotely from within the state of Montana, provided the candidate is sufficiently digitally capable from their location.
    Regular travel is required as needed for court appearances throughout the state of Montana, and as needed for on-site work or events.

    Compensation and Benefits:
    Pay range 4Bi: Starting salary for the position begins at $101,100-$126,300. This is an exempt position.
