    As a Vehicle Operator you will provide transportation for adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Vehicle Operator ensures the safety of the vehicle for operations, assists ambulatory and wheelchair-bound individuals in entering and exiting the vehicle, and ensures individuals are properly seated and secured, providing assistance when required. The Vehicle Operator is also responsible for regulating heat, lighting, radio, and the ventilation system for the comfort of vehicle passengers. Other responsibilities include maintaining daily transportation logs and written reports, ensuring that the vehicle interior and exterior is clean, inspecting vehicle for safety and reporting any maintenance concerns or issues.

    Required Skills

     

    • Requires a clean Driver’s License, Class B or C. Must meet requirements for DOT and 19A certification; will train to obtain CDL with P-endorsement.
    • Must obtain and maintain valid CPR/First Aid certification
    • Post hire all Vehicle Operators are required to become certified in Wheelchair Securement/Lift Management.
    • Basic computer literacy (e-mail, Internet searches, simple edits to Word documents and Excel spreadsheets)
    • Good communication skills
    • Tolerance for stress
    • Must be able to deal effectively and responsibly with The Arc employees, persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, the general public, and volunteers.
    • Must be able to pass bi-annual 19A physical

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Standing 15% of the time; walking 10% of the time, and sitting 75% of the time.
    • Frequently required to ascend or descend stairs.
    • Very frequently required to exert up to 20 pounds of force, and occasionally exert 50 pounds of force.
    • Visual acuity required to operate motor vehicles, view a computer terminal, and check accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of written work.
    • Ability to use all equipment and adaptive equipment safely and effectively.
    • Required to push, pull individuals who could weigh up to 300 pounds in wheelchairs in and out of the bus.
    • Be able to bend, kneel, reach, stretch and turn as appropriate to manipulate all vehicle controls while safely operating the vehicle.
    • Be able to bend, kneel, reach, stretch and turn as appropriate to correctly use tie-down equipment to correctly secure passenger wheelchair.

    Required Experience

     

    High school diploma or GED preferred. Three years experience driving. Experience working with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities is helpful.
