About Our Patient Population: The patient population for home dialysis is quite diverse and has been growing over the years. Here are some key statistics and information:

    • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects more than 1 in 7 U.S. adults—an estimated 37 million Americans.
    • Nearly 1 in 3 people with diabetes and 1 in 5 people with high blood pressure have kidney disease.
    • Approximately 2 in 1,000 Americans are living with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD)—kidney failure that is treated with a kidney transplant or dialysis.
    • As of March 31, 2024, there were 517,321 patients on dialysis in the US. Of those patients receiving dialysis, 433,066 receive in-center hemodialysis, 79,777 receive dialysis at home and 4,478 receive dialysis in a nursing home or skilled nursing facility.
    • At the end of 2020, 13.7% of all patients undergoing dialysis performed dialysis at home. This percentage has increased approximately 50% between 2010 and 2020.
    • In 2020, the president issued an Executive Order called Advancing American Kidney Health Care that directed CMS to promote home dialysis and transplant.
    • Overall, the percent of incident patients on home dialysis grew from 6.8% in 2010 to 13.3% in 2020, while the percent of prevalent patients on home dialysis grew from 9.1% in 2010 to 13.7% in 2020.

These statistics indicate a significant and growing need for home dialysis services, including the need for renal dieticians to support these patients. The role of a renal dietician is crucial in helping these patients understand their lab values and prepare for their new pathway on dialysis. Premier Dialysis Services is committed to meeting this need and providing the highest quality of care to our patients.
